Alan Sinclair
Elliott
June 1, 1939 – November 4, 2021
Elliott, Alan Sinclair - died on November 4, 2021, at the age of 82, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, N.S. seniors' residence, where in 1969, his grandmother, Ethel Victoria Gates Elliott and, in 2005, his mother, Julia Evelyn Joy Cox Elliott, also passed. He loved playing with ideas, both futurist and historical, and made an impact on the world while he was here. He will not be forgotten.
Alan was born on June 1, 1939, in Middleton, N.S. He was the second of 5 children and the first son of Sinclair Parker Elliott and Julia Evelyn Joy Cox Elliott.
Alan was a unique youngster and a man who marched to his own tune. He was always interested in history, whether of people, plants, or animals. He was creative, imaginative, and highly intelligent.
After graduating from Middleton Regional High School, Alan first attended the Nova Scotia College of Agriculture in Bible Hill, N.S., earning scholarships to go on to receive his degree from Macdonald College at McGill University in Montreal. He won the Governor General's medal. Always eager for new experiences and with some scholarship funds still in the bank, in 1959 Alan left Quebec to hitch-hike west and join his sister Carol's family in Alberta for a camping trip through the United States.
Following this trip across Canada and the United States, Alan was ready for some serious living. He returned to the family farm in Spa Springs, Nova Scotia where he worked beside his father on their 4-generation farm for many years. Alan loved the farm, the soil, the animals, and he loved working with other people to realize new concepts—breeding and creating certified "Wholly Natural" animals and crops. He generously shared that love with his sisters' children whenever they ventured to spend time at the family farm.
Alan was also interested in human history and in writing fiction. He helped his sister Linda who authored family histories and collaborated with his sisters, Cheryl, and Carol, on fictional stories. He often challenged the status quo, legally and figuratively. Indeed, he marched to his own tune. The world changed a little as he marched.
Alan is survived by his half-brother, Roy Benjamin and family, his older sister, Carolyn Elliott Stevens of Brighton, Ontario, her husband, Richard Stevens, and their children (Alex, Geri, and Katrina), grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his younger sister Cheryl McIntyre of Calgary, Alberta, along with her children (Gjordi and Kyle) and her grandchildren. Alan was predeceased by his father, mother, younger brother David and sister Linda Elliott Doshen.
Cremation has taken place and the family will be interring his ashes in Pine Grove Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St., Middleton, N.S. toll free 1-855-825-3448.
