Allison Slocum
Fisher
April 11, 1932 – January 15, 2024
FISHER, Allison Slocum – 91, of Somerset, Kings County, passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 15, 2024, at Fundy Villa, Berwick. It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to a loving, devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Born in Somerset, Kings County, he was the only child of the late Harold and Elizabeth (Slocum) Fisher. Shortly after graduating high school, he joined Eastern Bakeries Ltd as a salesman and later was promoted to sales supervisor where he was employed for 31 years. Allison was active in the community and church in many different ways throughout his life. He attended the Berwick Baptist Church for nearly 40 years, serving several times on the Trustee's and Finance Committees as well as on the Deacon's Board. In his latter years, he became a member of the Berwick United Church. He was a past member and secretary of the Berwick and District Board of Trade, a past serving member on the Board of Directors of the Western Kings Memorial Hospital, a past member of the Annapolis Valley Antique Engine Club, a member of the Maritime Pre-War Car Registry, one of the founding members of the Apple Capital Museum and also served on the Museum's Board of Directors. Allison was also a long-time member of the Kings West PC Association and served for 12 years as 1st Vice President. He was a 50-year member of the Berwick & District Lions Club of which he was very proud. He served on several committees and boards over the years in the Lions Club. Allison volunteered for many events but one he enjoyed in particular was the selling of tickets for various Lions Club charity raffles and draws; he enjoyed visiting with folks while selling tickets and was one of the best, if not the top, annual seller for several years. One of his great past times was inventing; he could pretty much build anything he set his mind to. Before his retirement, and following his employment with Eastern Bakeries Ltd., Allison was employed with the Dept of Transportation where he was a road construction foreman. Even though he was not an engineer, he was told by one, that he was amazed at how his roads were built to excellent construction standards; all without the benefit of any formal training. Designing and building was a lifetime passion which began as a child when he would build go-carts and anything with wheels or engines. This passion continued into adulthood when, in his retirement, he built a 1930 Model "A" Ford Roadster. He continued to be active in the community into his 90's and participated annually in the Canada Day Parade in Burlington as well as the Berwick Gala Days parade and local car shows; often taking home a trophy for his Model "A". Allison could often be seen driving his bright yellow Model "A" on Kings and Annapolis County country roads. Prior to Phyllis' death, they could often be seen participating in car events and parades. He also enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling, and loved spending time at their cottage in Black Rock. The family cottage was built by Allison in 1961 and they aptly named it "Fundy Spray" as it was situated on the Bay of Fundy. However, more importantly, it reflected upon him being a proud descendent of Joshua Slocum "the first person to sail single-handedly around the world", in his tiny sloop the "Spray." But of all his passions, his greatest was his love and devotion to his family. He was fiercely proud of his family and was a loving husband to his late wife, Phyllis, an adoring and very proud father to his only child, Joan, and his son-in-law Doug, and a patient and loving grandfather who enjoyed a very special and close relationship with both his granddaughter and grandson. He loved his great grandsons dearly and always took great pleasure in family gatherings. He was a kind and humble man. A very soft spoken "gentleman", who had a quiet demeanour but loved to visit and chat. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He was a friend to many and always had time for a smile and a chat. He will be missed by all his friends at Fundy Villa. He is survived by his daughter, Joan (Doug) Butt, Somerset; grandchildren, Katherine - Katie as he called her, (Kevin) Ferguson, Lower Sackville, and Evan, New Minas; great grandsons, Liam and Noah; sister-in-law, Jean Brydon and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis (Brydon), and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Friends are invited to share their memories at a visitation to take place at the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448, on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at the Berwick & District Lions Hall, Wilson Family Community Room, Kings Mutual Century Centre, 250 Veterans Drive, Berwick, NS, on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 2 pm; Reverend Ivan Norton officiating.
