MALTON, (Tanton) Anne (1935 - 2021) |- Anne was born in Hastings (St. Leonards, Sussex, England) in 1935, not too far from the site of a famous battle that occurred 869 years earlier. She was evacuated briefly to a town in the county of Kent during the Second World War, when the fear of invasion occurring was high, and the Hastings waterfront was thought vulnerable. She was educated at Hastings High School for Girls, being Head Girl in her final year. She became fluent in Parisian French while spending several summer vacations living in Paris. In 1953, Anne attended London University (King's College) to read English Literature. There she met Peter, a King's College London theology student. They married in 1958. Anne and Peter had four children – Jonathan (Marilyn), Andrew (Anna), Helena "Mel", and Dominic. All six emigrated to Canada in 1966 and settled in Muskoka, Ontario, in Bracebridge. Anne taught at the Muskoka Lakes College for Boys, and later worked with the Provincial Ministry of Community and Social Services, helping to develop local services to the developmentally handicapped. Notably, she established the first local ARC Industries (Adult Rehabilitation Centre) in the Muskoka region. While managing ARC, she also ran as NDP candidate in two federal elections. Later, she and Peter moved to a 100-acre farm near Huntsville, where Anne ran a successful goat herd and goat-milk/cheese operation, in addition to serving as organist and choir director at St. Thomas' Anglican Church in Bracebridge. She also ran her own catering company, Blackbird Pie, during these years, and was a talented and enthusiastic actor in local community theatre productions. In 2007, Peter and Anne sold the farm and moved with their daughter Mel to Nova Scotia, where Anne became organist and choir director in the Anglican Parishes of Aylesford and Berwick. Following complications from diabetic vascular disease, Anne became an amputee in 2013. After a year of convalescence in Digby, Anne moved with Peter to establish themselves in Berwick, where she mastered the use of a prosthetic, picked up where she'd left off, and again involved herself wholeheartedly in her family, her church, and her community. After a fall in May 2021, her frail health necessitated a move to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Middleton, where she was awaiting a transition to nursing home care. Always a sweet-natured patient, she remained at Soldiers' until she died, very peacefully, on August 19, 2021. In addition to her husband and children (she was predeceased by Dominic in 1967), she leaves five grandchildren, all in Ontario – Nathaniel (Mary), Sunny (Kalene), Ioanna, Sebastian (Caroline) and Margaret. She has two great-grandchildren – Johanna and Rupert, and two more on the way. She expressed in her last days her confidence that she would meet them all again. May she rest in peace and rise in Glory. A funeral service will be held ain St. Mary's Anglican Church, 20 Morden Road, Auburn, at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 27, with Rev. Canon Lynn Uzans officiating. Due to pandemic gathering restrictions, there will be limited seating, masking, social distancing, and hand sanitizing are required. For those unable to attend the service there will be a livestreaming of the service available at 10:55 a.m., Friday, August 27 ADT, by selecting the 'livestream' option at the top of the funeral home webpage. Cremation has taken place, and interment at a later date. No flowers, please, by request.
