Obituary

BAKER, Arnold Howard ~ It is with profound sadness that the family of Arnold Howard Baker of Margaretsville announce his passing on August 1, 2013 at the age of 75 years due to complications from open heart surgery at the New Halifax Infirmary. Arnold passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Born in Berwick NS, he was the son of the late Walter and Martha (Pierce) Baker. Arnold was a member of the United Church of Canada in Margaretsville. He was an avid sports fan having played ball in the Valley and in Levack ON. He was a coach for the Margaretsville Marlins and was a member of the Valley Dart League for 25 years. Arnold spent many enjoyable hours playing cribbage over the years. In 2003, retirement finally arrived after working 38 years for Andrew's/Leon's Furniture Store and previously worked for Inco Nickel Mines in Ontario. Arnold was a past member of the Margaretsville Fire Department. After retirement, Arnold enjoyed working with Country Generations, travelling throughout Canada, USA and Australia ~ most of all he enjoyed the Concerts by the Sea in Margaretsville. Until recently, he was a volunteer driver for TCTS in Bridgetown. In addition to his wife of 50 years, the former Sandra MacMurtery, Arnold is survived by daughters Arlene (Paul) Buhagiar, Greenwood; Raelene (Kevin) Corbett, Port Lorne and step daughter Janice (Tom) Bickle, Cobourg, ON. He was proud and loved his grandsons Liam and Keelan Corbett and their involvement in school but especially with sports and looked forward to his daily chats with them. Also surviving are step grandchildren Nathan (Jillian) Bickle, Naomi Bickle, Luke (Alexandra) Bickle, Jesse (Laura Ashleigh) Bickle and Hannah (Josh) Lamers all of Cobourg ON. Great step grandchildren Elijah, twins Eve and Gracie and Kaleb Bickle, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sisters Florence Magee, Evelina Foster and Jean Andrews. Brothers, Edward and Henry. Step great grandsons Levi and Joshua Bickle. By Arnold's request cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 2 pm in the Middleton Legion, Branch #1. Interment will be in the Bay View Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of NS, The Canadian Diabetes Association or to the charity of one's choice. The family wishes to extend heartfelt Thanks to Dr. Paul MacLean, Dr.'s and nurses at the VRH and The New Halifax Infirmary, floors 6.2 and 5.1 CVICU, especially Jessica.
