Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Lynn (Cole) Madic, on the last day of May 2018, during the Flower Moon. Barb fought cancer courageously in the seven months following her diagnosis and slipped away in peaceful sleep surrounded by family, who were constantly by her side during all phases of her life. Born on May 12, 1958 in Middleton, she grew up in the Annapolis Valley and although she lived all over Canada as a military spouse, Barb chose to come back to her roots here in the Valley for her last years of life. Barb leaves behind her three beloved daughters Belinda, Hillary and Hannah to whom she devoted most of her life, raising them to be beautiful, strong, smart women. Barb will be dearly missed by her sisters and brothers, Sheila, Clint (Catharine), Zelda (Bruce), Jan, Michael and Dana (Bobby). Her loving and devoted parents Sam and Alda Winia, and the late Walter Leo Cole, deeply grieve her loss as well. She will be sadly missed by her three grandchildren, her nieces and nephews and by her lifelong friend Louise (Samson) Gottel. Barb's life centered around hearth and home. She was happiest in the company of family and good friends and would warmly greet them at the door with a welcoming smile as the smell of her hearty home cooking wafted through the air. Barb luxuriated in reading good literature, watching concerts at lively places like Centre Stage and Evergreen Theatre, and had a love of taking beautiful photographs. She enjoyed carefree afternoon drives in the beautiful countryside and could often be found taking in the serenity of the shore. Barb is well known for her kindness, generosity and intellect, but above all, had a fabulous sense of humor (and loved laughing at her own jokes). Her career in Public Relations included writing crisp copy for radio and television, the production of promotional materials, and organizing of conferences and events for numerous organizations. In 2017 she proudly led the communication and administration for the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival and held a special place in her heart for all things apple blossom. Barb was also a key member of the team that secured the Landscape of Grand Pre as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Barb also consistently volunteered within the communities where she lived, most recently with the Kingston/Greenwood Community Health Board. The entire Cole family extends warm thanks to Barb's care team which included; Dr. Puetz, Dr.Merryweather, Dr Burgess, Dr. Burch and nursing staff who gently guided her care and treatment at Valley Regional Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Barb's life will be held at Saint Mark's Chapel in Greenwood on June 9, 2018 at 2 PM. A reception will follow at the Kingston Fire Hall. All are welcome to both events. Family flowers only please. Donations in Barb's memory can be made to Fidelis House Society in Kentville or to Evergreen Theater in Margaretsville.
