It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Berton Errol Clayton, who passed away peacefully at his home in Meadowvale, Nova Scotia, on August 20, 2026, at the age of 72. True to his independent spirit, Bert remained at home until the very end—exactly where he wanted to be.
Bert was predeceased by his beloved wife, Caroline; his parents; and his brothers, Kevin and Ricky.
He leaves behind his children, Marie Claire Clayton, Paul Richter (Shari), and Kim Richter (Sherman Peters); seven grandchildren; his sister Wanda (Cuthbert); former sister-in-law Shelley Clayton; several nieces and nephews and many extended family members and friends. A special mention to his dear friend, Garnet Barkhouse, who shared many good times with Bert and was a steadfast source of friendship and support as his health declined.
Before retiring, Bert worked as a refrigeration technician at CFB Greenwood. He enjoyed curling, playing darts, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. The hunting camp in the Wentworth Valley held a special place in his heart, where he and Caroline spent many years enjoying countless hunting trips and hosting family and friends. Bert also loved horses and once owned one of his own, until a spinal injury in 1996 forced him to give it up.
Music was another great love. Bert played guitar and enjoyed many memorable weekends playing at jams with his friends, the “Twisted Family”.
Bert will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A legion tribute service will be held on Wednesday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Kingston Branch No.98, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place afterward at Fairview Cemetery in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. A video recording of the service will be available later following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Hunters & Angling Association.
