Obituary

SMALE, Carol Beatrice On Friday, December 31, 2010 Carol died. She was born in Dartmouth in 1926 and was the daughter of the late Samual Pagan and Beryl (Freeman), Pagan, Alexander. She is survived by her husband Colonel (Retd) Herb; sons Michael in Long Beach, California; Patrick and daughter-in-law Carmen, Middleton; daughter Beth and son-in-law Sam in Trenton, Ontario; grandsons Mitchel, Matthew, Luke and Noah; sister Dorothy Goudey; brother Bill Alexander and sister-in-law Mary. She was predeceased by brother Hubert and step-father Joseph Alexander. It was on September 5th, 1952 when Carol and Flying officer Herb Smale were married at the Protestant Chapel, RCAF Station Greenwood against all regulations at the time as he was an Officer and she was an airwoman. It was true love and they celebrated fifty eight years of joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, but always love. Her family was her joy. In 1966/67 Carol contracted a life-threatening heart problem, the result of a prescription drug. She was the first person in North America, and possibly the world, to suffer a side effect from it. Her first two open heart operations were performed in the Vancouver General Hosptial. It was one of only three hospitals in Canada that were performing, what was then, advanced heart surgery. She was forever grateful for the excellent care she received from the surgeons, the heart team, nurses and staff during her months in hospital there. In later years Carol developed a severe intolerance to fragrances (perfume) and became physically ill when exposed, so had to give up all the social activities she had always enjoyed. Her family and friends understood and always arrived scent-free for visits. She lived with courage, compassion and dignity. To best remember her she asked that you be kind to others and take time to enjoy the people you love. Cremation has taken place. Relatives, friends and neighbours are invited to attend a memorial service and reception of happy memories in her honor at 2:00PM Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. Rev. Danny Smith officiating. By request, family flowers only. Donations in Carols memory may be made to the charity of your choice. I still find each day too short
For all the thoughts I want to think,
All the walks I want to take,
All the books I want to read, and
All the friends I want to see.
The longer I live, the more my mind dwells
Upon the beauty and wonder of the world.
