Obituary

COOKE (Gillis), Cathy Lynn ~ Age 59, Waterville, Kings Co., passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2020, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on June 19, 1961, in Berwick, Kings Co., she was a daughter of Joyce L. (Dort) Gillis-Rhynold, Waterville, and the late Murray T. Gillis. Cathy was a veteran member of the Waterville & District Volunteer Fire Department, and during her 40 years of service held many positions in the department. Like her late father when he passed away, she was also serving as deputy chief. Cathy was proud of the fact that she was one of the first female fire fighters in the Maritime Provinces. She was the Waterville Commissioner for the Village of Cornwallis Square, serving on the committee for the new Waterville Veteran's Memorial. Cathy was an adherent of Waterville Baptist Church and was a well-known volunteer and active in her community. She had been employed as a LPN at Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre, with time spent at Rainforth House and Plank Industries. Cathy was a member and current vice president of CUPE Local 1472, was a former president, treasurer, chief shop steward and had been a member of the provincial bargaining committee with long term care. She was an animal lover, attending many parades throughout the province with her beloved greyhounds and has been a member of Greyhounds Pets of Atlantic Canada. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband of 20 years, Christopher P. "Chris" Cooke; brother, Stephen (Holly) Gillis, Waterville; step sister, Audry Garside, Brampton, Ont.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her father, she was predeceased by step father, Harley Rhynold. There will be no visitation. Graveside service in keeping with public gathering restrictions will take place at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, August 28, in Berwick Cemetery, with Pastor Christina Bigelow officiating. Family flowers only, donations in her memory may be made to Waterville & District Volunteer Fire Department, Canadian Cancer Society or to the Apple Tree Foundation.
