Dave Cameron, 62, of South Farmington, Nova Scotia, passed away on October 17, 2026, at the QEII in Halifax. Born August 22, 1964, in Sydney, Cape Breton, he never really left the island in spirit. No matter where life took him, the Cape Breton Highlands were home. He loved sharing the stories of its communities, advocated for local issues, and showed off its beauty to anyone who would look at his photos (and a few who hadn't planned to).
Dave served 28 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, most of them in the air force as an Aviation Technician. That service shaped him, and he stayed passionate about veterans' issues for the rest of his life. Veterans for Healing in Cape Breton was especially close to his heart. Its men's group, workshops and songcamps meant a great deal to him, and he believed deeply in veterans looking out for one another.
Music was the other great love of his life. For years he worked with April Wine, turning up at shows across Ontario, Nova Scotia and beyond, and ran the band's website and social media. Online, he also ran several Facebook groups dedicated to Canadian rock, bringing together fans from across the country and making sure the music he loved kept finding new ears.
At home, Dave could usually be found with a guitar in his hands, a camera around his neck, or out on his bike. He spent his career keeping real aircraft in the air and his downtime flying virtual ones, with somewhat less concern for safe landings. Above all, he was the best "Bampa" William and Ben could have asked for.
Dave is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kelley; his son, Ryan (Kristy); his grandsons, William and Ben; his brother-in-law, J.R.; his sister, Darlene (Bill); his nieces, Angela (Boyd) and Stacy (Mack); and countless other family members. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernie and Theresa Cameron; and his sister, Rosalie.
In keeping with Dave's wishes, a small celebration of life will be held next summer in Ingonish, Cape Breton, with details to follow. In the meantime, Dave would want you to head to your favourite spot in the Highlands and enjoy it.
The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at the QEII for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave's memory may be made to Veterans House Alliance International, designated "About Turn," in support of Veterans for Healing. Donations can be made and more information found at veteranshouse.ca/donate.
Dave always reminded people to take their daily dose of Vitamin G: gratitude. We're grateful for every day we had with him. Take yours today, and think of him.
