David Walter
Mangle
October 3, 1950 – August 20, 2025
The family of David Walter Mangle of Wolfville, Kings Co., N.S., sadly announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. David so loved life and was not finished satisfying his dreams. He navigated a difficult illness (cancer) with grace and determination and passed peacefully with his family by his side. We will miss his laughter, his love of adventure and travel, his passion for social justice, the sound of his trombone and tuba, his love of playing games of all kinds, his pride in his wonderfully stacked pile of firewood and the joy he displayed while he caught another wave while body surfing in the ocean. Jane and David were happiest spending time together, especially playing tennis, x-country skiing, camping, and spending time near the ocean. Moreover, it is the unwavering pride and love he displayed in being the father of Sarah and Aaron and the partner to Jane that will be forever remembered.
The son of the late Harry E. Mangle and Miriam Viola Mangle (Krieger), David was born on Oct. 3,1950 in Danville, Pennsylvania and is survived by his wife Jane of 47 years; and children, Sarah Mangle (Emma Moss Brender) and Aaron Mangle (Anna Bald); sisters, Elizabeth Mangle (Mary Beth Thomas), Miriam Moyer and Harry Mangle (Judy Bruce Mangle). David grew up in Pennsylvania, with his heart set on someday coming to Nova Scotia. He graduated with a Music Education Degree from Susquehanna University in 1972 and had a long career teaching instrumental music that included teaching in Baltimore, MD, Glace Bay, N.S. and the Annapolis Valley, N.S. With an interest in learning more during those years of teaching, he additionally completed his Masters in Music Education from Penn State University in 1980.
David had a lifelong interest in working for social change. This included his work with the Indigenous Rights Coalition and Project Ploughshares, and his collaborative work leading social justice/educational tours in Mexico. His Diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies from Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo, led him to his work for L'Arche, and Support Services Group and as a mediator and conflict resolution facilitator. He also co-founded Just Us Coffee --Canada's first fair trade coffee roaster as well as the Wolfville Community Mediation Society. Further, he served as a councillor for the Town of Wolfville for over a decade and was a longtime dedicated member of the weekly Peace Vigil in Wolfville that continues to stand every Saturday morning in front of the Wolfville Post Office.
David's love of music kept him involved as a teacher and performer throughout his life and most recently with community bands in the Annapolis Valley, including the time he cherished spent with his friends in Kings Brass.
David's love of sports of all kinds both as a participant and an observer continued to his last weeks of life as he was determined even through his illness to get to Aaron's Senior Men's Soccer games. He will be remembered as a most dedicated fan.
David held a special place in his heart and a strong loving bond with four young boys and their parents. Rumi, (Bruno and Selah) Perry, Raphael, (Shannon and Jocelyne) and Sequoia (Lydia and Henry) will hopefully always cherish the fun times spent with David.
David and Jane request that donations in David's memory be directed to Doctors Without Borders or Valley Hospice Foundation .
