Obituary

THERIAULT, Denis Joseph - Our wonderful husband, father, brother and friend passed away August 23rd at the age of 83 in his home in Kingston, NS. He died peacefully with his sweetheart, Leande (Godbout), wife of 60 years, holding his hand. Denis was born August 27, 1931 in the Acadian community of Belliveaus Cove, NS. He was the fourth born child of Thomas Theriault and Leola (Amirault) Theriault. He began his career with Fairey Aviation in Dartmouth as a mechanic and in 1958 he joined the RCAF. After completing basic training in St Jean, PQ he was posted to Summerside, PEI. Subsequent transfers were to Greenwood and Shearwater NS. He worked primarily as an airframe technician on various aircraft including the Lancaster, Neptune, Argus and Dakota. In 1984, Master Corporal Theriault retired to the family home in Wilmot, NS where he began a busy retirement life as a tireless volunteer, vegetable gardener, clam digger, community cook, apple cider brew master, competitive cribbage player (he boasted at least one 29 hand) and the go-to-guy' when something needed fixing or building for his wide circle of comrades and the extended family and friends of Branch 98 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He is most recognized for his 21 years as a volunteer driver of the Pharmasave Shuttle Bus service between Kingston and Halifax. For his exemplary dedication, he received a 15 year service pin award from the Victoria General Hospital. Volunteer activities with the legion included fundraising cookouts, construction projects to improve home accessibility for aging comrades, legion representation at community events such as parades and Remembrance Day activities. For his generous efforts and contributions, he was awarded Veteran of the month in February, 2010 and in May 2011 he was recognized as a life time member to the Royal Canadian Legion. He is survived by his wife, Leande, children, Darlene (Scott Croucher), Halifax; Lisa Harrington (Kirk), Dartmouth; Joey (Nancy), Dartmouth; and Mona (Yong Ho Kang), Kingston; grandsons, Justin, Matthew and Kory Harrington and great-grandchildren Ethan and Kyla. He is survived by sisters, Agnes Theriault, Annemarie Amirault, Rosalie Doucette and Eileen Sharp; and brother, Neil. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Desire and Gerald. When Denis married Leande in 1955, he was welcomed into the Godbout family as a son and a brother. He is survived by his in-law brothers and sisters: Therese, Victor, Edward, Ivan, Jeannette, Joel (husband of his great friend and fellow cribbage player, Joan) and Claire, and numerous grand-children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren!Denis embraced and celebrated life, even in these last difficult months. He and Leande proudly partied on their 60th anniversary on July 24th. He especially enjoyed his many visits with his friends and family. We were all blessed with many enjoyable and companionable days with him and the opportunity to demonstrate our love with his tender care to the very moment when he passed, unafraid, into the arms of his Lord. We will remember his life on Saturday, August 29th beginning with a funeral service at 11 am at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 37 Connaught Ave, Middleton, NS. Following, at approximately 1pm he will be honored by his comrades with a Legion Service at 98 Branch Legion, Veteran's Memorial Lane, to be followed by a celebration of the important things he enjoyed most in life, family, friends, food and drink. In recognition of the exceptional support the family received from the Legion, St. Monica's Parish, Palliative Care and the VON, we are requesting donations to be made to one of the following charities in lieu of flowers: Memorial Fund, Branch 98, Royal Canadian Legion, Kingston, NS; Mid-Valley Palliative Care, PO Box 730, Middleton, NS, B0S 1P0; St. Monica's Catholic Church, Middleton, NS, B0S 1P0; VON Annapolis Valley District 46 Chipman Drive, Kentville, NS B4N 3V7.
