Derek Jeffrey
Atkins
November 19, 1978 – January 4, 2026
ATKINS, Derek Jeffrey ~ Age 47, of Auburn, Kings Co., N.S., passed away peacefully in Q.E.II Health Sciences Centre, Victoria General Site, Halifax, on Sunday, January 4, 2026, surrounded by family members.
Born November 19th, 1978, in Berwick, Nova Scotia, he was a son of C. George Atkins, and the late Karen E. (Temple) Atkins. Derek was a man who lived life with curiosity, laughter, and a mischievous sense of fun that made every moment memorable.
He loved spending time at the shore, feeling the wind and salt on his face, and had an unshakable fondness for the outdoors. A lover of all thing's sports, he could talk as passionately about a game as he could debate the mysteries of the universe. A devoted reader, he could often be found curled up with a good horror book.
It was never a dull moment when Derek was around. Family and friends were at the heart of his world, and he delighted in making them laugh, whether with a quick-witted comeback that no one saw coming, or a perfectly timed joke. Those who knew him best remember his stories, his laughter, and the joy he brought to every gathering.
Derek had a thoughtful and endlessly curious mind. He loved deep conversations about everything from philosophy to the paranormal — ghosts, aliens, and all the mysteries of the universe. He had a way of exploring the unknown with equal parts humor and wonder, turning any conversation into an adventure shared with those lucky enough to be listening.
Above all, Derek's legacy is the love he shared and the joy he brought into the lives of everyone around him. He will be remembered not just for his laughter, wit, and stories, but for the warmth, kindness, and unforgettable presence that made him truly one of a kind. He was especially proud to be a father and a grandpa, and his children and grandchildren brought him endless joy, just as he brought endless joy to them.
Derek is survived by his long-term partner, of 17 years, Deanna Bowlby, Kingston; father, C. George Atkins, Auburn; son, Michael Atkins (Maria), New Minas; stepdaughters, Kelsey Bowlby, Kingston; Krystal Bowlby (Brian), Cambridge; stepson, Brandon Bowlby; Kingston; five grandchildren, Angel, Hayden, Haley, Hunter & Mikah; brother, Steve Atkins, Auburn; sisters, Elisha Stevens, British Columbia; Chrissy Stevens, Greenwood; Kim Atkins (Jeff), Melvern Square; Sonja Atkins, Ontario; and several nieces and nephews.
Derek was predeceased by his mother, Karen E. Atkins.
