Diane Stack Kakonyi was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, in 1957, the first child and only daughter of Vincent Stack and Rosemarie LeBlanc. Her brothers Wayne, Michael and Paul followed in short order, as the military Stack family was transferred first to France, then Summerside, PEI and finally to Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Graduating from West Kings High School and then Kingstec, Diane joined Royal Insurance in Saint John, NB, and moved on to the Red Cross Transfusion Service there, and then to the Service's Halifax regional branch. In 1990, Diane married Les Kakonyi, who brought his children, Heidi and Michael, into her life. A year later, Molly was born. She and Diane's was a mother-daughter match grounded in unconditional mutual love. In 1995, Diane was diagnosed with breast cancer. She, her family, her medical and legal advisors and all those who knew her, then embarked on her character-defining, life-affirming odyssey, reaching homeport just a few days ago on November 20, 2011. A vital, questing spirit, a woman with more friends than flip-flops (and that is saying something considering her vast collection), Diane's life flame burned so strongly and brightly that it took a hurricane-strength wind of change to extinguish it. Diane was an organ donor. Diane is survived by her mother, brothers, niece Saige, Aunt Heather and Uncle Bill, the very special Beth Morrison, cousin Maegan and her husband Aaron and a truly long, impossible-to-reproduce list of those who shared her never-say-die life. Both visitation, this Friday, November 25th between 7 & 9PM, and Diane's service, this Saturday, November 26 at 1:00PM, are at Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, in Middleton. A gathering at the Kingston Legion will follow the Saturday service at Diane's request. Please come and be with all the others who loved and knew her. Instead of flowers, please consider donations to the people who were of such great help to her and the family, and continue to be to others: The Carey Me Fund (Palliative Care), and Mid-Valley Palliative Care.
