Diane Joyce
Martell
September 13, 1935 – August 3, 2020
MARTELL, Diane Joyce ~ Middleton . It is with immense sadness, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother - Diane Joyce (Dumais) Martell, on August 3, 2020, in Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Middleton, with her daughters by her side. Born in Saint Boniface Hospital, Manitoba, on Friday, September 13, 1935, to Roy and Florence (Gladu) Dumais. Diane and younger brother Marc, were raised in a bilingual family, and she attended a convent for all of her school years. She loved to dance, and met the love of her life, while at a dance at a military Officer's Mess, in Winnipeg. Since Dad passed the dance test, they married soon after. Mom took on the military life, and hence began moving and travelling around the world, almost immediately. They added four children to the mix, beginning in Ottawa, through to Goosebay, and ending in Germany. Their time in Europe afforded them many, many opportunities, including hobnobbing with the rich and famous, to visiting the Playboy Club in London, and seeing all of Europe, in its splendor. They eventually retired in Greenwood - Mom took up curling (which she became very good at), and was on a Provincial Senior winning team. She also golfed out of Greenwood and Eden. She volunteered, in different capacities, while enjoying these sports. Mom was a voracious reader, and started to find it difficult to discover a book, she hadn't read. She also loved to play bridge and scrabble, with family and friends, and hosted many dinner parties, in Greenwood. Her memory was absolutely amazing - she could recount stories as far back as early childhood with such clarity and detail - you would think you were there with her. She also continued to travel a lot, going on two or three trips every year. But her crowning glory, and claim to fame was her love of music. She learned to play piano at a young age, and never stopped. She entertained in hospitals and in seniors homes, for the veterans, and in skits, and she played and sang for Remembrance Day every year, and several times, at curling and golf functions. She could turn a Ho - Hum function on its ear, and make it into a wonderful party that many times lasted into the wee hours. She really did not know how truly talented she was - we will miss her and her music forever. Surviving are daughters, Joanne (Peter) Spicer. Middleton; Janice (Danny) Knickle, Kingston; Dawn (Mark Quartermain), Greenwood; son, Richard (Rona) Martell, Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren, Evan, Danielle, Katie and Brandon; step granddaughter, Jessica; several nieces & nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Richard A. "Dick" Martell; son, Marc Martell. Cremation has taken place and a private gathering will be held due to Covid 19 restrictions. A time in celebration of her life will take place at a future date. Donations in her memory may be made to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the Kidney Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
