Obituary

Doreen Priscilla Jean Stillwell, Age 88, of Wilmot, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 21, 2025. She was born on August 19, 1937, in a small village near Bristol, England, to the late William (Willie) and Audrey Sampson. She was also predeceased by her brother, Geoffry Sampson, and her husband, Glendon (Glen) Stillwell her devoted companion of over sixty years.
In her early years, Doreen worked at the local pharmacy before returning to school at the Nova Scotia Teachers College while raising her two young daughters. She went on to have a distinguished career in education, becoming a teacher and later a school principal. After retiring, she cared for her parents in their home until they passed.
In her later years, Doreen remained at home, lovingly supported by her family. Her daughters, Holly Stillwell and Kelly Leddicote, were by her side, with Holly and her partner, Cyril Durling, helping care for her locally, and Kelly and her partner, Kerry Rathbone, sharing in her life and supporting from British Columbia. She also cherished spending time with her grandchildren, Kyle Stillwell and Kailee Hebb, who brought her great joy.
Doreen loved gardening, cooking, painting, and crafting, and she cherished time spent near the ocean at the family cottage in Margaretsville, enjoying the lobster that her husband Glen caught out of the bay. She also enjoyed learning to use her iPad and adored her full-time furry companion, Peanut. Some of her happiest memories were the trips she took with family. She continued exploring, traveling, and spending time with loved ones away from home, with her last trip in 2023.
Doreen's family will fondly remember the warmth she brought to every holiday and special occasion. She loved having a full table, all the fixings, and as many family members as possible gathered under one roof. Bringing people together was one of her greatest gifts.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to a very special friend, Wendy Banks. Her exceptional care, steadfast support, and genuine friendship brought warmth and reassurance to Doreen in her final years. Wendy's dedication and compassion were a gift to both Doreen and the family.
She is survived by her daughters, Holly (Cyril) Stillwell, Wilmot, NS; and Kelly (Kerry) Leddicote (Stillwell), Comox Valley, BC; her grandchildren, Kyle Stillwell, Comox Valley, BC; Kailee Hebb, Lawrencetown, NS; and Evan Pearce, Toronto, ON.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 29th from 1pm to 4pm in the Nictaux Fire Hall. Donations may be directed to the Nova Scotia SPCA.
