DICKSON, Doris "Hazel"
– Age 89, resident of Windsor Elms Village, formally of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23rd, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. Hazel was born on May 3rd, 1928, in Lower Caledonia, Guysborough County, the eldest daughter of the late Alexander Ernest and Florence Catherine (Cruikshank) Fraser. In 1947, Hazel enrolled at the Aberdeen School of Nursing in New Glasgow, graduating from the R.N. Program in 1950, after which she specialized in obstetrics at the Royal Columbian Hospital in West Vancouver, B.C. Hazel returned to Nova Scotia and went to work at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. On May 31st, 1953, she married her husband of 43 years, the late Leslie Hugh Dickson, son of Charles Hugh and Emily Mabel (Misner) Dickson. In 1962, Leslie moved Hazel and family to the Annapolis Valley where she became "Night Maternity Nurse" at Western Kings Memorial Hospital in Berwick, retiring in 1981. Hazel was a member of the Kingston United Baptist Church and a life member of the WMS, she volunteered on the church kitchen crew and donated many hours and crafts to church sales. She enjoyed crafting, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as traveling the continent with Leslie. In 2000, at a banquet in New Glasgow, she was awarded her gold cap for 50 years in nursing. In June of 2014, Hazel became a resident at the Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth, where she was a bright and special light to many of the staff and residents. A special thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Elms for making Mom's final years and hours very loving and comfortable. We, who are left behind with heavy hearts and loving memories, are sons, Scott, (Dina); Greg, (Glennie); brother, Bob (Mary) Fraser, six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. Predeceased by husband, Leslie; grandson, Aaron; sister, Marion; and brother, Wesley. Visitation to he held Wednesday, February 28, from 7 pm to 9 pm, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448, from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday March 1. Rev. Leon Langille officiating, with interment in North Kingston Cemetery.
