Few lives are measured by achievements alone; Dorothy Marie Beals' life was measured by the people she loved, the students she taught, the faith she lived, and the countless friendships she nurtured along the way. For ninety-five years she shared her gifts of kindness, wisdom, hospitality, and service. On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Dorothy passed away peacefully in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by the memories of a rich and meaningful life.
Born in Mosher's Corner on December 28, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Dorothy (Slocomb) Bent.
Dorothy “Dot” was a graduate of the McDonald Consolidated School in Middleton and the Provincial Normal School in Truro.
Prior to marriage she taught for three years in rural schools. For fifteen years she was a stay-at-home Mom and then returned to her beloved profession. Her next twenty-four years were spent teaching at the Middleton Regional High School, retiring in 1993.
She was a faithful member and supporter of the Middleton Baptist Church, for over 74 years. Due to COVID and mobility issues, it was necessary to worship at home online. It was important to her to keep in touch with her church family.
Dorothy was a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and was the recipient of a 60-year pin.
Other interests were the Hospital Auxiliary and Annapolis Valley Historical Society.
After retirement she spent many hours compiling genealogy on both sides of her family.
In 1988 her daughter travelled with her to England and Scotland. Being able to visit the homeland of her ancestors brought her great joy.
She loved to play bridge and was still playing in her 90’s. She loved entertaining and enjoying that afternoon cup of tea with her friends.
COVID had arrived when Dorothy had her 90th birthday and she needed something to do. It was time to write her story, especially for her grand and great-grandchildren. It was important to her that they have some idea of life on a farm during the great depression and wartime. Her memoir “My First 21 Years” was completed before the end of the year.
Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers, Malcom (Mary), Lloyd (Betty), and Gilbert (Jr.) Bent; sisters, Barbara (Donald) Appleby, and Lucy Fowler.
Surviving are daughters, Donna Moore, Calgary; Debra (Kenneth) Fredericks, Waterville; Paula (Greg) Wallis, Middleton; son, Edgar (Nell), Halifax; grandchildren, Laura (Patrick) Gaudio, Kenny (Krissy) Fredericks, Rev. Michael (Julia) Fredericks, Lindsay Freckleton, Jonathan Gysbers, Luke Gysbers, Sarah Gysbers, and Arianna Beals; and 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Phyllis Bent; brother-in-law, Roger Fowler; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026 in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, 1-855-825-3448. Rev. Michael Fredericks officiating.
