Dorothy Beatrice
Bishop
October 31, 1933 – January 26, 2025
BISHOP, Dorothy Beatrice ~ Age 91, of Clarence, Annapolis Co., passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born on October 31, 1933, in Bloomfield, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Delbert J. and Hazel L. (Gray) VanBuskirk.
As a young woman on the family farm, Dorothy could be seen in the fields working a pair of oxen or horses. Later she cared for young children and especially loved caring for babies. When Mom married our father, Gordon Bishop, in 1957, she became a valued partner in building and running the family farm, and raising a family of their own. Our Mom was a beautiful cook and baker, and enjoyed hobbies like quilting and knitting, often being asked to knit a baby set or a pair of socks for family or friends. Mom was also very community minded and worked hard alongside her many cherished friends in support of the Clarence Community Hall and the Clarence United Baptist Church. Our mother was a quiet, gentle woman but she also had a competitive streak, enjoying cards, darts and crokinole. Mom loved nothing more than teaching her grandchildren to play crokinole. It was not uncommon to hear "Watch your teeth Grandma" during a rowdy game at the kitchen table.
Dorothy was the last surviving member of her immediate family and the last of the Bishop spouses. Surviving are her children, Gary (Mary) Bishop, St. Johns, NL; Brenda (Bud) Bennett, Burin, NL; Donna (Hal) Elliott, East Margaretsville; grandchildren, James (Samantha), Neil, Sarah (Larry), Gabe (Cassandra), Kathryn (Colin) and Travis (Laura); great grandchildren, Savannah, Alexis, Sadie, Lyza, Wilder and Leona; sister-in-law. Bernice VanBuskirk, Meteghan; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Gordon Alston Bishop; sisters, Bessie (Harold) Minard; Hilda (Wilfred) Coolen and Flora VanBuskirk; brother, Adelbert VanBuskirk.
Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2025 in the Clarence Baptist Church with Rev. Janet Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown. Donations in her memory may be made to Clarence United Baptist Church or Clarence Community Hall. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, 1-855-825-3448. Online guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
