Obituary

It's with broken hearts that we share that our dear mom, Dorothy Jean Girard (MacNevin/Miller) passed on to her Heavenly home, Saturday July 5, 2025.

Mom was a proud "Islander," born in Milo, Prince Edward Island on April 7th, 1940.  She was the second of 8 children.

Leaving home at the age of 16, she went to Eastern Nazarene College in Boston MA, where she earned a secretarial diploma.

Mom met and married our dad, Reginald Miller, from Glacé Bay, Nova Scotia in 1959, eventually settling on the military base in Greenwood Nova Scotia.  Mom loved the Lord, which was evident throughout her life.  She was a long time member of Melvern Square Baptist Church, being in charge of the weekly bulletin, and active in the ladies missionary group.  She loved to sing, but would be the first to tell you she couldn't. She was a loyal and loving friend, and loved to entertain.  If you were sick, you could expect a pot of her homemade turkey soup and fresh biscuits to show up at your door.

Mom was preceded in death by a baby sister, Rose, two brothers, Keith and Norman, our dad, Reginald, her mother and father, Irene and Rod, and numerous aunts and uncles.

She is survived by daughters Cindy Kane, Middleton NS, and Kimberly (Eric) Svec, Buckley MI; sisters, Jean Legge, Sydney NS, and Joan Quaade, Sydney NS;  brothers, Edwin (Eleanor) MacNevin, North York ON, and Brian (Anna Marie) Point Edward NS.  She also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Paul (Jessica) Kane, Round Rock TX; Sarah  (Caleb) Paterson, Edge Water BC; Tyler (Jessica) Svec, Buckley MI;  and Jordan (Amelia) Svec, Buckley MI;  and 12 great grandchildren (with one more on the way) Graydon, Lincoln, Rylan, Anthony, Lucille, Kaleb, Elijah, Josiah, Arlis, Elias, Malachi and Danielle.  Many nieces, nephews and friends are also feeling a loss.

We would like to thank the wonderful nurses, physiotherapists and doctors at Kentville Valley Regional, Middleton Soldiers Memorial, and Digby General Hospitals for their care of our mom.  We'd especially like to thank Dr. Matthew Sabean, Dr. Ian Ross, and Dr Mary Margaret Keating, who provided exceptional care to mom in her final years.

Our comfort at this time is knowing that mom is safe with her Saviour, and that our separation is only for a brief time.  "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."  11 Corinthians 5:8.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Charity Baptist Church.  A celebration of life service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, September 6, 2025 in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448 with Rev. Warren Jones officiating. A reception for family & friends will follow the service. Interment will be in Church Grove Cemetery, Melvern Square.
