MITCHELL (Smith), Dorothy Agnes ~ Age 97, Middleton, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019, in Orchard Villa East, Berwick. Born in Margaretsville, on March 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Alvah B. and Isabelle G. MacMurtery. Dorothy taught school in Moshers Corner prior to her marriage and later was employed at Andrews Department Store. Dorothy was a founding member of Emmanuel Congregational Christian Church, Middleton and had been a member of Myrtle Rebekah Lodge No. 46 and Ladies Auxiliary of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 1, Middleton. She enjoyed any kind of handiwork especially quilting, knitting, rug hooking and crochet. She was happiest in the kitchen baking and preparing meals for family and friends. Dorothy had been a resident at Orchard Villa East in Berwick since 2016. Surviving are her daughter, Donna (Norval) Higgins, Greenwich; son, Stuart Smith (Joan Murray) Summerside, P.E.I.; grandchildren, Rebecca Higgins (Mike Cheng), Ceara Higgins (Demetry Assimakopoulos), Tristan (Jolynne), Anna and Aidan Smith; great grandchildren, Parker, Sophia, and Josephine Higgins, and Oscar Cheng; stepchildren, Alan (Sandra) Mitchell, Mary (Bill) Bell; step son-in-law, Terry Mahar; step daughters-in-law, Carolyn and Penny Mitchell; step grandchildren, Ann, David, Beth, Maureen, Laura, Robert, Nicole, Andrew, Cathy, Ryan, Joseph, Katie, Susan, Craig, James, Raymond, and Mathew; 26 step great grandchildren; brother, Earl MacMurtery, Middleton; sisters, Gladys Stronach, Margaret Weaver and Sandra Baker, all of Margaretsville; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Carl F. Smith; second husband, Earle A. Mitchell; step sons, Keith, Hugh, Steven (Sylvia) and Scott Mitchell; stepdaughter, Kathy Mahar; step grandchildren, Michael and Sarah; brothers, Joseph in infancy, Roland, Ivan, Louis and Ashley MacMurtery; The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Orchard Villa East for the loving care they provided to our Mother. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 28, in Emmanuel Congregational Christian Church, 37 Gates Avenue, Middleton. Rev. Sweis Ubels officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Family flowers only, donations in her memory may be made to Orchard Villa East, Berwick or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Middleton Funeral Home.
