Obituary

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather, Douglas Clarance Cook on January 22 nd , 2020 after a brief illness. Doug was a proud Cape Bretoner, born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia on December 10 th , 1936. He graduated from Central High in New Waterford in 1954. In school he was a gifted basketball player (winning Provincial championship), rugby player and musician. Following graduation, Doug was employed by the Royal Bank where he worked at various branches throughout Nova Scotia. At just about the same time, he won the heart of Geraldine (Dean) Carrigan, the woman he adored and who would be his wife for 60 years. They were blessed with four children: Doug, Wayne, Darrell and Tami.

In 1963, Doug became an investment advisor with Eastern Securities in 1963. In 1973 he became General Manager of the Kings Mutual Insurance Company in Berwick retiring in 1996.

Doug was an avid member of Holy Trinity Church in Middleton and the St Francis Church in Bushnell, Florida. Some of his past accomplishments included: Queen Scout, District Commissioner Scouts Canada, Board Chairman, Nova Scotia Community College (Annapolis Campus), Vice Chairman Nova Scotia Minimum Wage Board, Vice Chairman Nova Scotia Pulp Wood Marketing Board, President Annapolis East Progressive Conservative Association, Founding Director and President of the Maritime Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (MAMIC), Founding Director and President of the Canadian Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (CAMIC), Director of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies USA (NAMIC)

Under Doug's tutelage, Kings Mutual grew to be one of the most successful Mutual Insurance Companies in Canada. Doug was very well respected in the industry.

Doug and Dean relished in the love of their family and enjoyed camping (with two epic adventures across Canada and the US) and eventually the warmth of their cottage at Trout Lake where many days were spent water skiing, snowmobiling and good times with friends.

Doug is survived by his wife, Dean (Carrigan), son Wayne (Christine), son Darrell (Shari), daughter Tami (Joe), daughter-in-law Paula (Gregg), beloved grandchildren Jessica, Lauryn, Michael, JenaLyn and Wyatt (Ninetta), sisters Sheila MacKinnon (Pat), Marilyn Lee (Leo), brother Fred and many nieces and nephews. Doug was pre-deceased by parents Fred and Florence (Hulme) and son Douglas. He will be remembered by his grandchildren for his perfectly cooked bacon, beloved family tree history lessons and his love for loud Cape Breton music.

The family would like to especially thank sisters-in-law We Dipenta, Andrea (John) Gallivan and good friends Harold and Sharon Escue for their tireless love, support, assistance and friendship.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 26th at 2pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Main St., Middleton with Reverend Paul Jennings and Reverend Lynn Uzans officiating. Family flowers only.
