Douglas E. A. Rawle

Rawle, Douglas Edward Arthur – 89, of Berwick, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026 in Windsor Elms, Falmouth. He was a son of the late Walter and Annie (Rogers) Rawle and the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was born in a small farmhouse on the South Mountain of the Annapolis Valley, in the village of Tremont, Nova Scotia, on April 25, 1936. His early boyhood was spent on the farm in Tremont. The family then moved to Bear River and then Clementsport at the end of the Second World War.

Doug began his career in radio electronics after high school by joining the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He underwent basic training at Camp Utopia, New Brunswick and specialist training in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After completion of military service, Doug joined Maritime Telephone and Telegraph and then moved to Fairy Aviation, working in Greenwood as an aircraft electrician on the Argus maritime patrol aircraft. When Fairy Aviation shut down Greenwood operations, he joined Transport Canada, serving in both Air Services and Canadian Coast Guard Telecommunications and Electronics branches. Doug retired from the position of electronics project manager, on June 28, 1995, after 31 years of service to the Canadian government.

Doug enjoyed several hobbies, but his favorite two were playing bridge and amateur radio. His amateur radio callsign was VE1RK.

Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Alice (Zwicker), Berwick; sons, Walter (Heather), Corinna, ME, USA; Donald (Gayla), Waterdown, ON; daughter, Anne (Stephen), Aylesford, NS; grandchildren, Ashley, Matthew, Derek, Stephanie, Jessica, Natalie, Shawna, and Apryl; great grandchildren, Braydon, Emma, Maximus, Tyson, and Kenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sons, David, and Bernard; brother, Bernard; sisters, Ruth, Francis, Joan, and Olive.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Windsor Elms staff as well as Dr. Sabean, family physician, for the care and compassion they gave to Doug. A private service will be held in the spring in Tremont Cemetery. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia or the Windsor Elms.
