Obituary

MacCarthy, Edgar "Lloyd", age 90 of Auburn Kings County. It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Edgar Lloyd MacCarthy on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton. He was born on February 6, 1924 in Lochaber Mines, Halifax County to the late J. Edgar and E. Pearl (Dooks) MacCarthy. After graduating from the Old St. Mary's School in Auburn, he remained on the small family farm and helped with the two rural mail contracts his family had. In 1946 he went to work for the late W.L. Nichols as a Meat Cutter and Grocery Clerk. In 1949 he was approached by Ralston Purina Company of Montreal and Missouri to work for them as Manager at their Kingston NS warehouse. In 1953, Quaker Oats Company of Peterborough Ontario opened a new Feed and Flour Warehouse in Aylesford under the name of Ful-O-Pep Farm Supply. Lloyd went to work for them as Manager until 1963, when he started his successful career with London Life of London Ontario. He worked for London Life out of their Halifax office until mandatory retirement in 1989, but had a special contract until 2003. With this, he was a member of Life Underwriters Association, The Honor Club and The 100 Club. Lloyd was a trustee for the old St. Mary's School for several years and when the new St. Mary's School opened in 1965, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He worked long and hard, and was successful, in keeping the name for the new school. Lloyd was a member of the Aylesford United Church where he served on many committees and was and Elder for 50 years. He was also Chairman of the Trustees for the Church Cemetery for 37 years. In 1951, Lloyd joined the Markland Lodge #99, A.F. & A.M., Kingston and was the longest serving Worshipful Master. He received his 50 year jewel in 2001 and 60 year jewel in 2012. The Aylesford & District Lions Club was also very important to Lloyd, where he was a member and Charter Member since 1967. Lloyd always had a love for horses; his favorite was the Standardbred, having raised several of his own. He was a member of The United States Trotting Association since 1950 and The Canadian Standardbred Association since 2002. Lloyd always enjoyed going to the horse races, horse shows, exhibitions and horse pulls. His love for his family and friends was always important to him. He enjoyed spending time with all, especially his grand-children and great-children. He is survived by his daughters, Colleen (Jim) Butt, Middleton; Christine (Micheal) Hamilton, Lawrencetown; grandchildren, Jayme Lynn (Noah), Jesse (Julia), Julianne, Kristin (Rick), Ryan, great grandchildren, Xavier, Kaylee, Maycie, Rachel; brother, Howard (June) MacCarthy, Auburn and several nieces and nephews.
