KIRBY, Edith "Elaine" passed away in Soldiers Memorial Hospital – Veterans Wing on 19 May 2016. Born in Newcastle (Miramichi City) NB 11 Feb 1925 Elaine was the third of eight children of the late Wilfred and Beatrice McCallum (Kitchin). Elaine was married to the late Douglas Kirby and is predeceased by son Alan and grandson Michael Kirby, sisters Norma McCallum, Jean (Veitch), Joyce (McKiel), brothers Lester and Charles McCallum. Elaine is survived by son Stephen Kirby (Amelia) Auburn NS; daughters Carol Kirby-Spencer (Christopher) Waterville NS and Susan Ebsary (Robert) Ottawa ON; grandsons Alan and Andrew Ebsary and granddaughter Becky Ebsary all of Ottawa ON; grandson Patrick Brick, Sommerset NS and great-grandson James, Berwick NS. She is also survived by siblings Laurie McCallum (Victoria BC) and Alma MacMillan (Gerry) Fredericton NB and several nieces / nephews. After completing high school and business school, Elaine joined the RCAF as one of the first women allowed to enroll during WWII. It was while stationed at RCAF Station Shearwater she met and married the love of her life, Douglas. After completion of their war time service she and Douglas resided in Kentville NS where Elaine was employed at Palmeter's Jewelry Store. Military service was a great draw to the young family and Douglas rejoined the military in 1951. During each of their "stays" across Canada, Elaine used her training as a clerk/typist in various businesses and doing committee work for the clubs and church organizations she belonged to. After a full career and experiencing the cultural diversity of Canada the family settled in Kinkora PE. True to her desire to contribute, Elaine became the Village Clerk for Kinkora PE for several years. In 1983 she and Douglas made their final move to Berwick NS to be near family and as with every place the family lived, Elaine continued to contribute to her community. Elaine was a congregate of Christ Church Anglican Church, Berwick, and a member of the ACW. After suffering a debilitating fall in 2010 she resided in Orchard View Apartments, Berwick before taking up residence in the Veterans Wing, Soldiers Memorial Hospital Middleton NS. The family wishes to thank the administration, nurses and staff of Soldiers Memorial Hospital- Veteran Wing for their kindness and support during Elaine's final journey. To comply with Elaine's wishes, cremation has taken place with funeral arrangements entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, Middleton NS toll free 1 (855) 825-3448. A Funeral Service, by Rev. Ruby Carter, to celebrate Elaine will take place 11:00AM Thursday, May 26, 2016 in Christ Anglican Church, 238 Commercial Street, Berwick NS followed by a private interment in Berwick Cemetery.
