Elizabeth "Liz"
Ann Mcadam
May 26, 1934 – November 9, 2016
McADAM, Elizabeth Ann "Liz". The family of Liz McAdam of Greenwood, formerly Wilmot, and Middleton, announce with great sadness the passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and very soon to be great grandmother, on November 9, 2016, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on May 26, 1934, she was the youngest child of the late Harry and Beulah (Heckbert) Richards of St. Stephen, N.B. Born in Fredericton, N.B., she moved several times in her early years, living in Toronto, Vancouver and eventually St Stephen, N.B. where she identified as home. Through school she was an active young girl who greatly enjoyed academics and learning, singing in choir, dancing, roller skating, and cheerleading. She graduated from St Stephen High School in 1952, and then Victoria Public Hospital School of Nursing in Fredericton, N.B., in 1955. While studying Nursing in Fredericton she met, fell in love with, and married her best friend, Donald A. "Digger" McAdam. Following Digger through postings from P.E.I. to B.C. with the Royal Canadian Air Force, they came to the Greenwood area in 1966, where she remained for the rest of her life. Liz's professional life was split between Nursing, having worked in Fredericton, N.B., Comox, B.C., Summerside, P.E.I., Berwick, N.S., and Middleton, N.S., and teaching. Following hospital duties, she spent the last 22 years of her career teaching the Canadian Nursing Assistant (now titled Licensed Practical Nurse) course at Annapolis Regional Vocational School. It was her love of Nursing and of teaching these skills to others that guided her professional life. Always willing to be involved, offer of her talents, and assist those in need defined Liz. She worked on the executive of the Greenwood Ladies Curling League, served as a Soldiers Memorial Hospital representative, served as Regent of Rosemary Chapter of the I.O.D.E., was choir director for St Mark's Chapel, Greenwood, and was President of the Ladies Auxiliary at Bayshore Covenant Church in Bradenton, FL. Liz is survived by her sons, Scott (Sharon) of Dartmouth; Pat (Mary) of Kingston, Ont.; Jim (partner Tobi) of Middle Sackville; daughter, Debra (Doug) Lyon of Stittsville, Ont. She will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren, Ryan, Robert, Jessica, Kathryn (Andrew) Powers, Melissa, Jamie, Courtney (Steve) Morrison, and Ashley. She will also be fondly remembered by her brother, and last surviving member of their immediate family, Frank (Jeanne) Richards of St Stephen, N.B.; her brother-in-law, Walter of Calgary, Alta.; her nieces, Nancy Gibbs and Susan McAdam; her nephews, Mike McAdam and Stephan and Bill Richards and their families, as well as Marilyn McAdam of Harrietsfield, and Ingrid Boutlier-McAdam, of Dartmouth. Her many friends and former students will miss her greatly, but remember her lovingly, as a sociable, outgoing, giving, and friendly woman with a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour. She enjoyed life and the camaraderie of others, whether in Canada or her much loved winter home in Bradenton, FL. Liz was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years Donald A. "Digger" McAdam (2003). Following cremation a memorial service and reception will take place at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 18th at Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 with Rev. Patty Beals officiating. A private family interment will take place later at North Kingston Cemetery. Family floral arrangements only please. Donations in Liz's memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.
