Obituary

Eric Leo Frederick—better known to everyone as Buzz—died peacefully at home on Monday, July 14th, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old, although he looked like he was 70.
Buzz was born on a Friday—June 12, 1936—in St. Margaret's Bay to Olive (Boutilier) and Simon Fredericks. He was the fourth of six children and proudly carried all the usual middle-child qualities: mischievous, competitive, and impossible not to love. Even in his final days, Dad's sense of humour never left him. One of his favourite sayings was, "It takes a good man to beat me—but it doesn't take him long." We've all heard it… many times.
At 18, Buzz joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving proudly until retirement and then—because he wasn't great at sitting still—worked as a civilian at CFB Greenwood for years after that. It was while stationed at Camp Aldershot that he met the love of his life, Norma Dewolfe. They married in early 1958, and every time Dad got posted somewhere new, the family seemed to get a new daughter.
Mom and Dad spent 64 years together before Mom passed away in 2022. Dad cared for her with a level of devotion and patience that inspired all of us. He kept her home as long as humanly possible—possibly longer—because that's who he was.
It's impossible to sum up Dad's life in a few paragraphs, but a few things deserve special mention. He was a proud father of five daughters—Sandy (John) Jensen, Sherry (Peter) Scoville, Maria (Dave) Cameron, Heather (Chris) Strickey, and Jenny (Allen Hiltz) Frederick—and he loved to tell anyone who would listen that his girls were amazing and treated him like a king. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored him right back. In Dad's words, he "won the lottery" when it came to family, and we all feel the same.
Buzz was the kind of friend who would show up for anyone. Whether it was driving someone to an appointment, cleaning the church, or hauling garbage to the curb—if you needed help, he was there.
Of course, Dad had his quirks. He was just a little competitive. Whether it was cribbage, pisanya, or cards with the grandkids, no one got a free win—not even the littlest ones. You had to earn it. He loved his Blue Jays, Sidney Crosby, lottery tickets, fishing, and big family gatherings. He and Mom loved apple picking together and sneaking off to "Lovers' Lane" for a summer getaway.  And let's not forget Dad's second home: the A&W at the Greenwood Mall. He spent many happy hours there, swapping stories with his coffee buddies and being spoiled by the wonderful women who worked there
Buzz is survived by his five daughters and their partners, 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law, Eleanor DeWolfe. He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved Norma, his brothers Forrest, Lester, and Dave, his sisters Mable (Tudie) and Olive (Audie), his son-in-law John, and his great-grandson Ira.
One of Dad's greatest wishes was to stay at home until the very end, and we're grateful that we were able to make that happen. A special thank-you goes to Sandy, who left her own home in BC to live with and care for Dad these past four months, with backup from the rest of us whenever and however we could.
A celebration of Buzz's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19th at the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, with Pastor Chris Wickens officiating. Reception to follow.  There will be a private interment for the family in Stoney Beach Cemetery following the reception.
