After a long and full life, the family of Ethel Ellen (Neily) McLane is saddened to announce her death on August 21, 2026. She was born on March 5, 1922 to Ernest and Anna Neily of Torbrook Mines, NS.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward, at an early age. Also predeceasing her, were her siblings and their spouses – Reagh (Jean), Robert (Hilda), Leola (Patrick Murray) and Ora (Alden Baker).
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Melanie (Derek Coombs), the lights of her life, her granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Chris Flynn) and Candice (Jarrod Arnason) and also by her many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Throughout her long life she enjoyed many occupations. After graduating from Normal College in Truro as a teacher, she taught in several one room schoolhouses and then went on to become a secretary in both Halifax and Montreal. Once married, she and her husband, Eddie, owned and operated a restaurant in Brookfield, NS. After his tragic death, Ethel went on to become the proud owner of DM Taylor’s general store in Torbrook Mines until retirement at age 65. She then moved into her cozy log home, which was built with love by her brother Reagh, and lived there happily until age 103.
Ethel was a long-standing member of Torbrook United Baptist Church, where she played piano until age 97 and she was happy to be involved in all aspects of community life in Torbrook Mines and the surrounding areas. She was generous and well-loved by all.
Many thanks are extended to friends, family and to the staff and doctors at TCU Soldier’s Memorial Hospital. Also, much appreciation to her special neighbours, Bob and Kelly.
Arrangements are under the direction of Middleton Funeral Home and cremation has taken place. There will be no service, per Ethel’s request. Donations in memory can be made to Three Rivers Community Hall or a charity of your choice.
