Ferne Elaine
Selig
June 16, 1953 – May 13, 2019
SELIG, Ferne Elaine ~ It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Ferne Elaine Selig (neé Veinot) passed away, surrounded by those she adored, at home on May 13, 2019. Ferne was born on June 16, 1953, in Caledonia, Queens Co., Nova Scotia. She is survived by her loving partner Darrell Chute; daughters Angie Selig (Lars Nichols), Nicole MacNeill (Shane Hachey), Shauna Selig (Mark Rose), Michaela (Joel) CôtéSelig; and step-daughters Pamela (Rob) MacGillivray, Tracy Chute and Cindy Chute. She will be forever loved by her grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Keeleigh, Lexie, Lauren, Carter, Lucas, Wyatt Fern, Noelle, Mason, Emily, Evan, Lauren, Vanessa, Palesa and Rielle. Also left to mourn are her siblings Ted (Edie) Veinot, David (Linda) Veinot, Bev (Dan) Rowter, and John (Debbie) Veinot, as well as her 17 nieces and nephews. She will also be fondly remembered by her surviving aunts and uncles: Nick, Elaine, Bob, Vernon (Betty), Fred (Janette), and Brenda, as well as Darrell's mother, Marjorie Chute, and his sister, Sandy (Paul) Casey. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Richard and Elsie Veinot, and nephew, Ian. In 1974, as a new mother in Barss Corner, Ferne helped establish a nursery school at the community hall, which continues today. She was an active volunteer in the community with the Barss Corner Baptist Sunday School, the local Brownies troop and the New Germany Arts and Crafts Association. When the girls were all in school, she worked with Weight Watchers, moving up quickly through the organization to become Regional Manager for Atlantic Canada. From there she started her own weight loss business in Bridgewater before moving to a career in the jewellery business. Ferne excelled in each career choice and always made sure she was at the top – consistently achieving top sales and recognition, including earning the coveted Pink Cadillac through Mary Kay. In 2014, she and Darrell purchased the Sears store in Kingston, Nova Scotia; turning the store into a thriving local business and providing the perfect segue for their planned retirement in the Valley. Through her family, career and interests, Ferne lived a busy life, full of joy, laughter and love. Food was always plentiful in her house and she was happy to set an extra place at the dinner table for unexpected guests. Ferne was happiest when cooking, enjoying the beauty of flowers and soaking up the sun. She also enjoyed singing and dancing to a good tune and giving good, long hugs. Her grandchildren were her true pride and joy--life revolved around them when they were visiting. Her daughters will remember their mom as a bright light in their lives with a captivating smile and a zest for life - kicking up her heels to a good Rod Stewart song, planning extravagant birthday parties and baking the world's best biscuits. She taught them that vacuuming is better with music, life is better with friends and dinner is better with wine. You are invited to attend the events planned to celebrate Ferne's life, including a gathering hosted by her brothers and sister on Thursday, May 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the home she and Darrell shared. Cremation has taken place; there will be a joyful service of remembrance on Friday, May 17, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Middleton Baptist Church with a reception to follow at noon. Ferne asks that you wear pink, her favourite colour. All are welcome to celebrate her life, reminisce and enjoy good food with her friends and family. Private interment will take place later that same day at the Church Grove Cemetery in Melvern Square. If Ferne could leave us all with one thought, it would be to hug your family close, stop and smell the flowers and laugh a good big belly laugh every single day. Ferne would like to be remembered with memorial donations to the 12 Baskets Food Bank in Nictaux or, if you so wish, flowers. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St. (902) 825-3448.
