Obituary

CALDER, Frank Hector , age 94, of Berwick, Kings Co., passed away on Wednesday January 24, 2018, in the Veterans Unit of the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton, with his family by his side. Born in Somerset, Kings Co., N.S., to parents John and Flora (Best) Calder. After attending Somerset School, he went to New Glasgow to take a course in Aircraft Sheet Metal at a training centre there. He joined the Canadian Army in May 1944, and served in the Signal Corps during the Second World War. He trained in Kingston, ON and Farnborough, England before being deployed to Holland and finally to Germany in the Army of Occupation. After being discharged from the Army, Frank attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro for two years, before then joining the Royal Canadian Air Force.  It was in Truro that he met his future wife Hazel. They were married in 1952. He served in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Greenwood, Nova Scotia and two tours of duty in Germany. Following release from the Air Force in 1973, he was employed as a laboratory technician with the Biology Department at Acadia University. On retirement from Acadia, he and Hazel travelled across Canada, and spent 14 winters in Florida. While stationed in Greenwood, he was Chairman of the Kingston Scout and Cub Group Committee, President of the Kingston Home and School Committee, and a member of the Kingston Lions Club. He was a member of the Kingston United Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Management. Franks hobbies were wood working, gardening, skating and spending time at their cottage at Trout Lake. Frank was pre-deceased by sisters, Margaret Calder Hepper of Victoria BC, and Marion McKennedy, of Toronto ON. He is survived by his wife, Hazel (Bigelow) Calder, a daughter, Cheryl (John) Ernst, a son, Charles (Wanda) Calder, and his four grandchildren – Andrew, Jennifer, Sarah and Amanda. By request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 29th, in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902- 825-3448 with Rev. Barry Dixon officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will take place in the Berwick Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please.
