Obituary

HAWKINS, Franklin Albert - 96 of South Farmington, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton with his daughter-in-law Lynn by his side. Born in Charlottetown, PEI he was a son of the late Francis and Rebecca (Henderson) Hawkins. Frank enlisted with the Pictou Highlanders on September 5, 1939. He served in Canada, United Kingdom and North West Europe and was wounded twice in active duty. In 1942 he married Thelma Hagman who was the love of his life. Later Frank owned and operated a service station in Wilmot before becoming an instructor at Middleton Vocational School until retirement in 1984. He was a member of Sunbeam Lodge IOOF and a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Middleton Branch No. 1 where he just received his 70 year membership bar. Frank was a member of the Kingston United Church and the beauty of nature and all wildlife creatures were special to him. He also enjoyed his time with his friends at the gym in Greenwood. Frank is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his son, Frank P. Hawkins (Lynn Boone), Bayport, Lunenburg Co.; granddaughters, Amanda Hawkins; Katherine Harpell; great granddaughter, Alexandra Harpell and great grandson, Andrew Harpell. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 70 years the former Thelma Hagman; sisters, Caroline and Grace and brothers, John, David and Leonard. In keeping with Frank's wishes, his body has been accepted to Dalhousie University for Medical Research. A Legion tribute conducted by Middleton Branch No.1 followed by a memorial service with Rev. Michael Mugford officiating will be held 2:00PM Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the Middleton Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made Companion Animal Protection Society or to a Charity of Choice.
