Obituary

MONTGOMERY, Frederick Henry passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 in the Veteran's Unit, Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. He was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan October 18, 1918 to Edward O. and Margaret J. (Pappin) Montgomery and just had his 93rd birthday. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Fred was an avid sportsman through the years, baseball, hockey, golf and curling in which he competed both as a coach and player. Fred served three and a half years on the North Atlantic on a Corvette as the supply officer escorting the fleets from Halifax to Iceland, Ireland and England and also a tour to the Mediterranean. He was then granted leave and served in Newfoundland for one and a half years. He was dis-charged from Halifax on October 29,1945. After the war, Fred and Maisie lived in Middleton and moved to Kentville where he was involved with Montgomery Bros. Men's Wear, raising their daughters there. In 1966 they moved back to Middleton to help Fred's brother Harold with Montgomery's Men's Wear in that town. He retired in 1979, enjoying his retirement golfing, watching sports and helping with the grandchildren and great grandchildren, telling lots of stories. Fred was a member of the Branch #1, Royal Canadian Legion, Middleton. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years the former Maisie Millicent (Abbott). Two daughters Margaret Jane (Paul) Langille, Brooklyn, Annapolis County and Karen Lea Montgomery, Middleton. Three grandchildren Derek (Toni) Langille, Millville, N.B.; Christy (Mike) O'Neill, Centrelea, N.S. and Amber Archer, Brooklyn, Annapolis County. Six great grandchildren Abbi and Zoe Langille, Millville, N.B.; Dagen, Erin, Hayden and Brooklyn O'Neill of Centrelea, N.S. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Cecil, Roy, William, Spencer and Harold as well as one sister Margaret Chipman and two infant children. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2011 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 beginning with a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute at 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 16th in the Middleton Funeral Home, Rev. Danny Smith officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of choice. Fred was a child of Christ the Lord and has gone home to be with him. We shall remember him. Special thanks for the care provided to Fred by the staff of the Medical Floor and the Veteran's Unit at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, however brief and to Dr. P. MacLean, long standing.
