Obituary

Rodgers, Gerald "Gerry" Michael Edward : 72, of Halifax, died suddenly at home on Monday, March 25, 2019. Born and living most of his life in Spryfield, he was the son of the late Mary Bridget Rodgers (nee Wadden) and Gerald Michael Rodgers Sr. As a child, Gerry attended the Halifax Grammar School and eventually earned Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Business Administration degrees from Saint Mary's University in Halifax. Gerry had been involved in the ownership and management of companies in the wholesale distribution, courier, trucking, and taxi industries, paying his own way through university by working at the Halifax Shipyards as an electrician and as a lead hand supervising electrical cable supply and distribution during the outfitting of offshore drilling platforms during the early to mid-1970's. In 1979, he started G.M. Rodgers Graphics, and in 1986 moved the print shop (by then re-named Park Print) to Lakeside Industrial Park. In the early 2000's, Gerry taught courses in website design at the former Bell Road Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Gerry was also deeply involved in local politics, running as a candidate for the Nova Scotia Party in the riding of Halifax Atlantic during both the 1999 and the 2003 provincial general election, where he served as party leader. He was a co-founder and charter member of the Halifax County Business Association and a co-founder and charter member of the Committee for Responsible Economic and Environmental Development (C.R.E.E.D), where he worked for the implementation of the HRM blue bag, green cart and beverage container recycling programs. He also lobbied governments on environmental issues relating to solid and liquid waste disposal in the HRM and in concert with R.A.T.E. (Real Action Toxins Environment) for the lawn pesticide ban in both provincial and municipal levels. He was also a past president of the Mainland South Heritage Society and a former director of the McIntosh Run Watershed Association. On a more personal level, Gerry was proud of the Competent Communicator designation he earned from Toastmasters International. He loved gardening, studying natural medicine, researching anything that caught his very curious and active mind and especially loved attending car auctions. He had quite a collection of the results of these auctions and only sold the latest collection off in the last year. Gerry loved exploring the back roads of our province and especially enjoyed swimming in the warm waters of Melmerby Beach. He was knowledgeable in many subjects and was delighted to share what he knew with those around him. Gerry was one of a kind and he will be missed by his friends, Davie, Scott, Elisa, Shirley, Alan, Sherma, Mike and Heather. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. Private interment will take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation, Halifax.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St. toll free 1-855-825-3448.
