Obituary

McCarthy, Gloria Marion - It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, age 88, of Kingston, Kings Co., N.S., who passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Valley Hospice, Kentville.  Gloria was the daughter of the late Robert and Marion (Burbine) Hedley.  Gloria was born in Joggins, Nova Scotia to a large family of 12 siblings.  Gloria attended her elementary school years in Joggins and completed high school in River Hebert, Nova Scotia.  When Gloria left home, she lived in many locations in Canada as she was a military wife.

Gloria worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia in different provinces:  Cold Lake, AB, Oromocto, NB, and Middleton, NS.  Gloria stayed home for 11 years so she could be home with her children.  Gloria worked on and off on a part-time or full-time basis until 1999.  In total Gloria worked as a teller for 25 years.  Gloria enjoyed walking with her friends, reading, baking, watching her favorite TV shows, playing Bingo and being part of the local TOPS group in Greenwood where she served as treasurer.  Gloria's greatest joy was seeing her great grandson, Lee.

Surviving are her children, Mark (Kim), Medicine Hat, AB; Kim Nelson (Kevin), Aylesford, NS; grandchildren, Jennifer, Medicine Hat, AB; James (Bella), Kingston, NS; and her great grandson Lee; siblings, Carolyn Melanson, Robert Hedley (Gayle), Lynn Gorman, and Jackie Hedley (Annamarie); many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Gloria was predeceased by her sisters, Dolores Mawdsley, Anne McIver, Joan Hedley, Jeanette Gallant, Eleanor Shipley, Susan Hedley; and brother, Peter (DeeDee) Hedley.

In keeping with Gloria's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family graveside interment will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Joggins, Cumberland Co., at a later date. Donations in Gloria's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Valley Hospice Foundation. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Suitor and Dr. Ozon for their exceptional care while Gloria was in the hospital.  A second thank you to Dr. Ozon for visiting Gloria at Valley Hospice; we are eternally grateful for your kindness, care, and compassion.  A huge thank you to the staff at Valley Hospice.  Your warm, welcoming atmosphere allowed us to feel at home during such a difficult time.  Thank you for your support, conversations, kindness, care, and compassion.  We are forever grateful to all of you.
