June 2, 1921 – July 22, 2023
Ward, Grace Dorothy – Age 102 of Middleton, Annapolis Co., passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Forest Glade, Grace was a daughter of the late Merville and Annie (Fisher) Hatt. She graduated from the Provincial Normal College in 1946 where she was president of her class and assistant editor of the year book. Grace worked as a teacher in Nova Scotia for several years. After her marriage, she lived in western Canada, Ottawa, France and Germany before returning to Nova Scotia in 1966.
Upon return from living four years in Europe, Grace and her family moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where she made many good friends. She was an avid reader and flower gardener. Her children remember receiving many bouquets of flowers to take to their teachers. Grace was an excellent seamstress, making her own wedding gown. She loved to quilt, making many beautiful quilts over the years. She taught her children and friends in her neighbourhood to quilt. She made many beautiful cross stitch pictures and knit many sweaters. When it came to needle arts, there was nothing Grace could not do.
Grace and her husband, Jack, retired to a farm in Victoria Vale, Nova Scotia where they lived for many years before moving to Middleton. Grace preserved many jars of jams, jellies and pickles. Grace also was a fabulous cook and baker, creating homemade bread, rolls, pies and other goodies. She loved to peruse magazines looking for new recipes and experimented with many delicious dishes. She watched 'Wok with Yan' on television and as a result made many tasty Chinese dishes. She made lovely birthday cakes for her children and at Christmas time she made mince pies, holiday cookies and plum pudding.
in retirement, Grace travelled with her husband to western Canada, eastern and western United States, Great Britain and Ireland. Together they enjoyed many long walks and picnics in Kejimkujik national park, Valley View park, Port George, Halls Harbour and many over night trips to Briar Island.
Grace is survived by son Ralph (Rosemary) Victoria Vale; daughters Anne Marie (Don) and Catherine (Doug) both of Halifax; grandchildren Kira, Aiden and Bronwyn; great grandchildren Zoe, Adina, Zahara and Hannah. Grace was predeceased by her husband Jack; sisters Marjorie, Georgina and Ada; brothers George, Lewis, Walter, Claude and Lloyd.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Middleton Manor and Mountain Lea Lodge for the wonderful care they provided for Grace. The family is also very grateful for the companionship that Mary Lou Cole offered Grace in her later years.
Cremation has taken place. Private family interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Middleton Library.
