Graham Kenneth
Thompson
June 6, 1936 – October 29, 2025
Thompson, Graham Kenneth ~ 89 of Middleton, NS, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS. Born in Middleton on June 6, 1936, he was the oldest of four children of the late Clarence and Thelma (Messenger) Thompson.
As a child, Graham lived in Brooklyn on the family farm until he was 16 years old. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Brooklyn until high school. He and his family moved to Nictaux in 1952. He graduated from Middleton Regional High School in 1953, part of the first class to complete all their high school education at MRHS. Graham then attended Acadia University from 1953 – 1956, graduating with a BSc in Chemistry and a Diploma in Applied Science. He furthered his education at Nova Scotia Technical College (later renamed Technical University of NS), graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1958.
He started his engineering career at Merck and Company in Valleyfield, Quebec, working there until 1960, when he took a job at Consolidated Bathurst in Bathurst NB, as a pulp and paper engineer. In 1962, he started employment with the St Croix Paper Company (now Louisiana Pacific) in Woodland, Maine, USA also as a pulp and paper engineer. He and his family moved back to Middleton in 1969, when Graham took over as General Manager of the family trucking business, Thompson's Transfer / Thompson's Moving and Storage. In 1988, he became president of the company after the passing of his father, Clarence. Graham was active in regional and national trucking associations, serving as President of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, and later as President of Allied Van Lines of Canada (1976 – 1978).
Graham married Sheilah Christine Phinney of Nictaux, NS on July 9, 1960. Graham is survived by daughters, Marla, Texas, USA; Jane, Massachusetts, USA; son, Peter, Dartmouth, NS; granddaughters, Nina McPherson (Cody), California, USA; Natalie Quigley (Liam), Halifax, NS; sisters, Marie Wilde and Linda Selig, both of Perth, Ontario, also many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graham was predeceased earlier this year by his wife of nearly 65 years, Sheilah. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother Vaughan ('Bud') Thompson, his daughter-in-law, Michelle Thompson (Peter), his sister-in-law Betty Thompson (Bud), and brothers-in-law, Don Wilde (Marie), and Mike Selig (Linda).
Graham was very active in his community. He was a member of Middleton United Baptist Church since 1969 and served as Chairman of the Finance Committee, the Building Committee, and the Ushers at various times. He was a member of the Middleton Curling Club from 1969-2017, curling recreationally where he was well known for challenging his teammates to start without him as he was always late for those 6:15 pm starts. He also curled competitively at the NS Mens, Seniors, and Masters whenever he and his team could win the right to represent Middleton. In 2002, he and his team won the Provincial Masters Curling Championship and represented NS at Nationals, an accomplishment for which they were enshrined in the Middleton Sports Hall of Fame. He also served one term as president of the curling club. He loved golfing and was a long-time member of the Eden Golf and Country Club, continuing to play as often as possible even as he became dependent on his playing partners to help see his ball. Graham was very active in Rotary from 1969 - 2021, serving one term as the president of the Middleton chapter. In 1997, he was very proud and humbled to be named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in recognition of his service. He served as a Councillor on Middleton Town Council from 1979 - 1982. Graham was also a dedicated blood donor, donating over 100 times until (much to his displeasure) his age made him no longer eligible.
The family wishes to thank countless friends and family members for their hospital visits, support, and prayers while Graham was in hospital. There are no words to express our heartfelt gratitude to family friend Shyanne Jenkins for her love and compassion for both Sheilah and Graham.
