COGGINS, Harold Frederick – age 100 passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born October 4, 1916 at Westport, Digby County, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late George Levingston and Susie Watters (Doty) Coggins. Harold spent his youth in Weymouth Nova Scotia. He served in the Navy during the Second World War. He worked for the Department of Fisheries for a year and a half following the war. On August 20, 1947 he joined the C.N.R. on Prince Edward Island and was an engineer on the M.V. Abegweit for 30 years, retiring in September 1976. Harold was an active Mason. He was initiated (August 1, 1945), passed and raised in Burns Lodge, No.10, A.F.& A.M., Halifax.; was an affiliated member of Mount Moriah Lodge No.15, Cape Traverse, PEI and the Worshipful Master of this lodge from 1952-1953. Harold was also an affiliated member of Ionic Lodge No. 73, Middleton, Nova Scotia. He received his 60 year bar from Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia August 1, 2005 and his 70 year bar August 15, 2015. Harold joined Royal Arch Masons on February 2, 1959 of which he was later made a life member and he received the Order of High Priest February 16, 1980. He also joined Mt. Zion Preceptory No. 73, November 16, 1960 and was made Preceptor January 21, 1982 and also a life member. Harold was a founding member of Austin Bentley October 26, 1988 and he received the York Cross of Honour on May 29, 1991. He was made a Life Member of St. Andrews Tabernacle No.85, January 27, 1990 and was a founding Member of the Rupert MacNeill Conclave No. 30, April 21, 1984; Appendant Orders April 20, 1985 and Sovereign, March 25, 1995. Harold also received Knight Commander Constantine. He was a founding member of the York Rite Sovereign College No.165, Middleton, Nova Scotia; Pre-eminent Governor 1997 and received the Order of the Purple Cross July 28, 2001.Harold joined the Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection on October 25, 1955 and received the Keith Chapter Rose Croix, 32nd Degree on March 27, 1976. He joined Philae Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Halifax on August 26, 1961; Garden of the Gulf Council No. 9, November 1966; Super Excellent Master November 9, 1966 and Royal Arch Mason, April 12, 1980 and was also thrice Illustrious Master, 1990. Harold was a founding member of the Order of the Secret Monitor of Canada and founding member of the Canadian Society of Mayflower Descendants, Nova Scotia, 2005. He received Honorary Title Past District Deputy Grand Master October 31, 2006 from Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia A.F. & A.M. Harold was a member of the St. John's United Church, Middleton, Nova Scotia. Harold leaves to mourn his loss, a brother, George Keith (Betty Gould), a son Peter (Jill), daughter in law Brenda, a grandson Spencer and great grand-daughter Ocean Mae, and grand-nieces and nephews; step children, Dianne Callaghan (Al), John MacLeod, (Janice), Donnie MacLeod (Elaine) and 9 step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Myrtle W. (Chute), October 1986, and by his second wife Margaret E. (Power-MacLeod), November 2005; his son Kenneth L. (Brenda) February 2015 and a grandson Nathan C. (Peter) October 2003, and step daughter Cathy MacCormick (Johnny). Also pre-deceased by his sister Dorothy Ellen (Hugh Allan), August 2014; brother Ellsworth T. (Pauline Best), May 1987; brother Richard B. (Mavis Coombs) March 1994 and brother Llewellyn C. (Lucy Fowler) May 2000. Visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 20, 2016 commencing with an Order of Eastern Star Tribute at 6 PM followed by a Masonic Lodge Tribute at 6:30 PM in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St. (902) 825-3448, from where the funeral service will take place at 11 AM, Friday, October 21 with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Private family interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to the Philae Temple Crippled Children Travel Fund in Trust or Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton.
