December 29, 1927 – December 7, 2017
SABEAN, (Mullen) Harriette Beatrice – age 89 passed away December 7, 2017, in the Digby General Hospital, Digby, NS. Born in Hassett, NS December 29th, 1927 she was a daughter of the late Percy and Minnie (Lewis) Mullen. She taught school for over 31 years, beginning in Southville during the Second World War at the age of 16. She returned to finish high school, then went on to attend the Provincial Normal College in Truro in 1947 for teacher training. Graduating from P.N.C. in 1948 she took up teaching in Plympton, Digby County followed by a year in Bermuda at Gilbert Institute. Returning home she taught at the school in Hassett to be near her Mother after the death of her Father in 1952. Wanting a break from teaching, in 1955 she enrolled at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium in Kentville in the nurse's aid course. Graduating from this she boarded the train for British Columbia to resume teaching in the Indian Village of Aujansh ( a place she and her friend Hazel could not locate on a map, nor pronounce its name!) Returning to NS at the end of the school term, she accepted a position as pastor of the church of the Nazarene in O'Leary, PEI. Years later in 1982, she finished her teaching career at the Havelock Consolidated School in Havelock, NS. Over the years whenever she was home she was active in the little Reformed Baptist Church (later the Wesleyan Church) where she taught about every Sunday school class there was. If she were here today she'd say "Teaching was my thing".Harriette is survived by her step-son, Carl (Mary), Hassett, and step-daughter, Anne Moulaison; grandchildren, Kirk and Shawna; great- granddaughter, Evelyn; many nieces and nephews who were very special to her. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her loving husband, Hallet; brothers, Clayton (Jeane), Glendon, Ivan (Ruth), Iver (Anne), Basil (Theresa), Burgess (Evelyn); sisters, Jean (Austin) Mullen, Nellie (Henry) Greene, Joyce (Francis) Ford and Rhoda Maxine in infancy. Harriette was the last remaining member of her immediate family and now she's gone on to meet them all. Visitation will be Monday, December 11, 2017, 1-3 pm at the Havelock Wesleyan Church, 5507 Highway 340.
