Obituary

On October 11, 2017 Hazel A. Downie was welcomed into heaven to be forever with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ whom she loved and served throughout her life. Hazel was born May 2, 1929 in Forest Glade, NS. She called East Margaretsville home for over 60 years.  July 2010 she became a resident of Crosskill Court, April 2017 she moved to Mountain Lea Lodge. Bridgetown.  She was pre-deceased by: husband Ralph, parents Clayton Pierce and Ouida (Harris) Pierce, brothers: Maxwell, Douglas, Archie, Russell and Aubrey, sisters:  Thelma Raddon, Ardis Schofield, Elma Tomkinson, Ethel Griffin, Melba Neily and  granddaughter, April Downie. Family was very important to Hazel and enjoyed their visits and phone calls.  She will be missed by her five children:  Alton (Corry) Elbow, SK, Phyllip (Bette), Bridgewater, NS, Murray (Karen), Forest Glade, NS, Marilyn (Danny) Steeves, Moncton, NB and Floyd (Kathleen), South Greenwood, NS, her eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, sister Jean Westlake as well as several nieces and nephews. Hazel was a busy homemaker and served her community in many ways throughout the years.  Hazel was a member of the Margaretsville Baptist Church and a Dominion Life member of the United Baptist Woman's Missionary Union.  She had been Sunday School Superintendent and teacher as well as helped lead the choir at the Evergreen Baptist Church.  When she moved to Bridgetown she was blessed by being invited to sing in the choir of the Baptist Church and participated in many activities.  She enjoyed music and often played her autoharp and sang for senior groups and church services. The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of Crosskill Court and Mountain Lea Lodge for the exceptional care she received as a resident and for all those who visited and showed her care and kindness. Celebration of Life service will be held at the Margaretsville Baptist Church, Saturday, October 14, 11:00 am. Visitation 10:00 am. Reception following service in the Margaretsville fire hall. Memorial gifts may be made to the Margaretsville Baptist Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Middleton Funeral Home.
