Obituary

ELLIOTT, Helen Louise passed away peacefully on April 26th, 2017 in the Annapolis Community Health Centre at the age of 99. Until the moment of her death one always felt a calm peace in her presence. Mom believed in the great power of love and lived it every moment of her life. Her gentle, unselfish and positive nature shone through and we her family feel so fortunate to have been touched by her grace. She felt that guardian angels were present in her life to guide her footsteps. Words fail to express our sense of loss at the passing of this beautiful lady. Helen was born to Fred and Henrietta (Fairn) Bishop in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County on September 18th, 1917 and received her early education there. She then decided to make teaching her profession and earned a diploma from Normal College, Truro in 1937. After teaching for 5 years in Annapolis County schools, she married her high school sweetheart, Claude, in 1942. They were faithfully and lovingly devoted to each other for 72 years until his death in 2015. Together they operated a mixed farm with all the challenges and rewards that this career involves. Helen was an active member and volunteer in her community, Clarence, until moving to Round Hill in late 2012. She shared her musical talent by playing the organ in the Clarence United Baptist Church and directing the choir for many years. She belonged to the Eastern Star, Women's Missionary Society and was a deacon in her church. She and Claude enjoyed the many community activities and shared many meals and cups of tea around the farmhouse table with family and friends. Thankful for her love and blessed to have known and loved her are her sister, Joyce Clarke; children, Sharon (David Longley), Anne (Gordon Flewwelling) and Gene (Carol O'Neill); grandchildren Chris Longley (Michelle), Jeff Longley (Brooke) Kevin Longley (Orla), Barbara (Blair Bond) Ron Flewwelling (Melanie), Julia (Jacob Crowell), Miranda (Chris Bates), Morgan Elliott (Becky), Michael O'Neill (Christy) and Sean O'Neill (Meagan); 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Claude and sister Florence.  Helen's family feels privileged to have been able to spend the last two weeks of her life with her in the Palliative Care Unit of the Annapolis Community Health Centre. Warm, compassionate care was given by Dr. Buchholz and the wonderful nursing staff to ensure that Mom was comfortable yet honoring the family's need for privacy. We extend to all of them our heartfelt thanks. Helen's life was full of love and kindness to all. She was happiest when caring for others, gardening and watching the cardinals at her feeder. Her legacy of love will live on in all those whose lives she touched and blessed. A celebration of life ceremony will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2017 in the Clarence United Baptist Church with a reception following the service. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. Donations in memory may be made to Annapolis West Health Foundation (Palliative Care) or Clarence United Baptist Church. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
