OLIVER, Helen Marie ~ Age 86, of Berwick, Kings Co., N.S., passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Helen, who was a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. We know that through her devout faith, our grief mingles with joy because she is now with her God.
Born on August 17, 1939, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, to the late James and Madeline (Pittman) Brewer. She was very proud to be a “Newfie” before Newfoundland joined confederation. Living on John Street met a special friend whom she connected with many years later at the Grand View Manor.
Helen lived a very full life making many friends along the way, with many accomplishments too numerous to mention. You could hear the laughter through the walls from her “wild” Saturday night card parties.
Helen was very active in the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish community, and a strong advocate for the Berwick Food Bank. Along with her time at Mass, you could find her volunteering at “supervising” many fundraisers and functions at St. Anthony’s.
Helen had the opportunity to enjoy many trips through the Cursillo Movement, the military and the trip of a lifetime to Medjugorje, Bosnia. Her love for her grandchildren knew no bounds as shown by her baking, camping trips and the numerous times they showed up at Nan’s because her heart and arms were always open, many times the grandchildren knew there would be fun and food to come.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Cecil; sons, John in infancy and Brian; brothers, Frank, John and James “Jim”; sisters, Carol Ann and Catherine “Kay”.
Surviving are daughters, Magdalen (Jerry) Schofield; Deanna (David) Curran; sisters, Mary, Theresa and Rose; brother, Tom; grandchildren, Matthew (Amy), Aaron, Zack (Jadah), Jason (Alex), Nikki (Patrick), Owen (Kaydem) and Kathy (Evan); great grandchildren, Dietrich, Raelynn, Dakota, Riley, Anthony, Duncan, Kele’l, Aiden, Raine, Chloe and Carley.
We have discovered that Mom also touched many hearts and made many friends during her stay at Grand View Manor. So, at this time we would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Valley Regional Hospital, Grand View Manor and Doctor Matthew Targett for the kindness, compassion and love they showed mom during her final days.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 120 Mill St., Berwick. Rev. Fr. Andrew Rembarczyk officiating. Interment in Berwick Cemetery, with a reception in the Parish Centre. Family flowers only, donations to Berwick Food Bank or any charity.
