Obituary

PALMER (Milne), Ina Lillian ~ passed peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2024, at home, surrounded by family. Mom celebrated her 99th birthday in March and was blessed to receive well over 99 letters and cards from family, friends and community members who were impacted by her through the years. Mom was born in Dartmouth and raised in Kentville. She was the eldest daughter of the late Laurie "Grandpappy" and Ruth (Green) Milne. Mom was blessed with many talents, which she shared freely with family and friends. She was a beautiful seamstress, and a cake decorator. Chances are you may have consumed Mom's beautiful cooking at their home in Welsford or later in Berwick, at Sweeney's Point, at "Carefree" in Florida, or even at the Berwick & District Lion's Hall, Berwick Baptist Church or Welsford Community Club. Or, you may have had some delivered to your door when you had a baby, or a hardship in your family. If you are lucky, you have a copy of her personal cookbook which has many beautiful family meals, or recipes to feed 100 people! Mom was a pilot in her younger years, breaking records in how quickly she mastered the skills of flying. She was a competent businessperson who stepped in as a young woman and ran the family business (Milne's Garage) for her father during the war. She later ran several businesses along with Dad, including Springvale Farms. She was one of the first people to switch over to doing her bookkeeping on the computer. Mom was a talented dancer, who entertained the troops during wartime, and she won medals for diving in her youth. Mom influenced many lives through her leadership in Guides, Explorers, and the Western Kings 4-H Club. She was a busy member of the Berwick Lionettes Club holding most offices over her 50+ years. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of the Berwick Baptist Church. Mom had friendships that spanned the generations. She was a caring and positive person who always had a word of support or a suggestion to help in any situation. She always focused on the positive and taught us to always do the right things, even when they were the hard things. Always a lady, in the truest sense of the word. Mom and Dad had a love affair that never ended. They created a blended family of love and caring when blended families were not the norm. Family was everything to them, and you didn't have to be related by blood to be considered family! For many years Mom and Dad enjoyed spending their winters in Florida at Carefree Country Club and their summers at the cottage in Sweeney's Point. Mom is survived by her son, and daughter-in-law, Paul and Nancy Grimm; daughter and partner, Lorraine Palmer and Aubrey Young, all of Welsford; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Anne and John Greenough, Newport; son-in-law, Bill Butler (Catherine), Windsor; and daughter by choice, Betty-Jean Flieger. She is also survived by her sisters, Dottie Barron, and Carol Anthony. Ina was very proud of her 10 grandchildren, Sally (Mick) O'Neill, New Glasgow; Andy (Christianne) Bezanson, Halifax; Jaime (Gabriel) Sanchez, Halifax; Cathy (Daniel) Oulton, Falmouth; Jessica (Ty) Curran, Ottawa, Ont.; Alexandra (Elijah) Soares, Toronto, Ont.; Lindsay (Emily) Greenough, Talia Greenough, Jacob Greenough and Simon Greenough all of Newport. Ina is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Norah and Lauren Bezanson; Ben and Joe O'Neill; Ella and Ethan Sanchez; Wesley, Laura and Timothy Oulton; Mason and Liliana Soares; Nadia and Tessa Pay, Nolan and Bowen Greenough; and many nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Norman; her beloved daughter, Mary Grimm Butler; her first husband, Ross Grimm; her brothers Cal, Sam, Lonnie, Gerry, Donnie, Ronald Milne; and her sister, Shirley Fraser. The family would like to thank the Victorian Order of Nurses whose care made it possible for Mom to live out her days in her home, Dr Puetz who went above and beyond to make Mom's final days comfortable, and Mom's amazing friends and extended family who dropped in for visits, often with a treat, to make her days more pleasant: To all of you, our deepest gratitude. A celebration of life will take place at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 18, in Berwick Baptist Church, 265 Commercial Street, Berwick. Rev. Andrew Conrad officiating, with a reception to follow in the church annex. Interment will be in Berwick Cemetery.
