Irene
Harley
January 31, 1940 – June 14, 2023
Irene (Langille/Dame) Harley passed away suddenly in Comox, British Columbia on June 14, 2023. Born on January 31, 1940 in River John, Nova Scotia to the late Myrtle and Wilson Langille, she was the oldest of the 'second 6' of a family of 12 siblings. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Irene is survived by her daughter Bev Sweet, grandson Adam Sweet (Katherine), great-grandson Jack, granddaughter Brianna Rosenthal (Brandon), great-grandsons Henry and William, son Frank (Denise) Dame, and grandson Dylan Dame. Irene also leaves behind a brother Mel Langille, sisters Gaye (Hubert) Hillier, Darrell (Gerald) Sutherland, and Roline (Gordon) Brown, stepson Robert (Linda) Harley, stepdaughter Kim (Jeremy) Grundy and their families. Predeceasing Irene were Bev and Frank's father Reg Dame, her second husband, Lorne ('Buck') Harley, her son-in-law Paul Sweet and 7 of her siblings.
Irene (aka Rene/Nana) always wanted to be a school teacher, leaving her home village at 14 years old to attend high school and Teachers College while working as a nanny to put herself through her formal schooling. She was a passionate teacher and loved every moment spent in the classroom. While raising her children, she taught in Lahr, Germany, and in Nova Scotia in Greenwood, Melvern Square, and finally Middleton Elementary before retiring in 1994. After the death of Reg she moved to Kamloops, BC and subsequently to Comox. She and Buck travelled a lot during those years, seeing as much of this beautiful world as they could. Spending time in Alberta and Nova Scotia with her grandchildren was incredibly important to her, and she loved travelling across Canada to do it.
Her final days were spent in Casa Loma & Comox Valley Senior Village. The family wishes to thank the staff for their care and kindness, and also the many family members and friends who supported her over the years. Irene will be interned in St. Andrews Cemetery at a private family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Irene's home village of River John, Nova Scotia where they are fund-raising for a new roof. Donations can be mailed to Denise White, Treasurer, 20 West Branch Road, RR # 1, Scotsburn, NS BOK IRO.
