Iris Faye
Rogers
August 10, 1930 – January 22, 2019
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear sister and aunt, Iris Faye Rogers at age 88 with her beloved niece by her side. She was the daughter of the late Leonard Alfred and Viola Evangeline (O'Connell) Garron, born at home in Westport August 10, 1930. Iris grew up in the small fishing community on Brier island and attended school at The Westport Academy or as she called it "The big red school house". After high school Iris went on to help her Dad baiting trawl and out on the boat handlining, ensuring her lifelong love for fishing. In later years, she worked for Connor Brothers store and canning factory in Freeport, then on to Saint John where she spent 7 years with T.S. Simms fabricating paint brushes. She finished out her working life in Halifax, spending 28 years as an accountant in the head office of the NS liquor commission making lifelong friends in the process. She retired in 1989, moving in and caring for her mother in the family home in Westport. Iris spent many memorable summers back at her camp (Hilltop) gardening, berry picking, reading, entertaining and enjoying a meal of black duck or pheasant whenever she could. She had a passion for four wheeling around the shores of the island and never missed a bingo night with her sister Beth. She also enjoyed dart tournaments and socializing and was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 92. Iris found great joy in family gatherings and with her much loved cat Mia. Always outgoing, and never missing a community function, Iris delighted friends and family with her sense of humour, and her strong, independent, hardworking, caring and feisty personality. She will be missed dearly by all those who were lucky enough to have known her. She is survived by sisters, Alva McDormand and Beth (Besse) Welch; brothers, George Garron and Eldridge (Cindy) Garron, all residing in Westport and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Alfred Garron and sister, Maureen Swift (Garron) Following Iris's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. A private family interment will take place at a later date in the Hilltop Cemetery. Memorial donations in Iris's memory may be made to the Islands Spay and Neuter program. We would like to thank the staff at the Digby General Hospital for their kindness and care with special thanks to nurses Roxanne and Katie for the love and compassion shown to Iris. Thank you, she cared for all of you. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home. 398 Main St. toll free 1-855-825-3448.
