Obituary

James Lowerison Carter, fondly known as Jim, Junior, Poppy or Cart, of Melvern Square, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by love at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, after a brief illness. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years Norma (Dunn), sons Geoff (Dianne Biggs) of Ottawa, Greg (Marcy Patten) of Oakville, daughter Lesley (Bruce Miller) of Beaverbank, sister Marion (Ken Roberts) of Richmond Hill, grandchildren Alexandria, Logan, Ethan, Drew, Brinn, and Jessica, great-grandchildren Ayden, Amiya, and Annabella, nieces Heather (Jeff Steiner) of Richmond Hill and Kerri-Lou (Derek Geens) of Brighton and special loved ones Jeff and Adele Taylor. He will be dearly missed by all, especially by his cherished English Springer Spaniel, Oscar.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents James "Laurie" and Ethel (Kirkpatrick) Carter of Melvern Square, and brother-in-law Ken of Richmond Hill.

Born in Middleton in 1934, Jim spent most of his life in the beautiful Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. He proudly attended the one room schoolhouse in Melvern Square and later graduated from Middleton Regional High School (MRHS) (where he apparently walked up hill both ways back and forth from Melvern Square). He briefly lived in Vancouver before returning to Nova Scotia to pursue a higher education at Acadia University, where he fondly recalled hitchhiking from Acadia to Greenwood Air Force Base to see Louis Armstrong perform.  While in university, he became a member of the West Nova Scotia Reserves Regiment out of the Armories in Middleton.

Jim devoted the majority of his career to the Department of National Defense at Canadian Forces Base Greenwood, where he held the position of Section Head Drafting and Design in the Construction Engineering Division until his retirement in 1993. His work took him to various locations, from Iqaluit to Bermuda.

He and Norma enjoyed many adventures traveling from Belize to Alaska, fulfilling their dream of visiting Vimy Ridge in France where they received a personal tour from their grandson Drew, student tour guide. He attended several live sporting events including a Blue Jay playoff game and the Masters Golf championship several times. Jim served his community as board members at MRHS, Greenwood Credit Union, Union of Public Service Employees, and as president of Middleton Curling Club.

Jim was a man of diverse talents; he instilled a love of learning new things in his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, tending to his vegetable garden, and playing cards, particularly cribbage, bridge and 45s.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed golfing and excelled in curling. He was a longtime member of Paragon Golf Course and Middleton Curling Club and was on teams that proudly represented Nova Scotia at National curling championships, including the Canadian Men's Seniors in Portage La Prairie, the Canadian Men's Masters in Medicine Hat, and the Legion Nationals in Charlottetown. His outstanding achievements led to his induction into the Middleton Sports Wall of Fame.

Jim's passion for Canadian sports extended beyond the curling rink and golf course. As a lifelong fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, he rarely missed a game during the season, much to Norma's chagrin. He also supported other Canadian teams, including the Raptors and the Maple Leafs, showcasing his enduring patience and subtle humor, often stating that the Maple Leafs didn't lose last night because they didn't play.

Grateful acknowledgment is extended to the caring medical team of Medical A at Valley Regional Hospital and the Victorian Order of Nurses. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be directed to either the Crohn's and Colitis Society or the Melvern Square United Baptist Church. A commemoration of Jim's life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, April 19, 2024 in Melvern Square United Baptist Church. Pastor Keith Pineo officiating. A reception will follow. A private interment in Church Grove Cemetery, Melvern Square will take place at a later time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448.
