Obituary

Marie Jeanne "Jean" Spencer (Surette), born January 7, 1933, lived a life marked by determination, service, and a deep sense of responsibility to her family and community. She passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, resilience, and commitment.

Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis "Frank" Edward Spencer; her parents, Helaire (Elie) and Marie Marte (Mattie) Surette (Comeau); her sisters, Anne, Stella and Yvonne; and her brother, Art.

She is survived by her loving children, Marleen Spencer of Lower Sackville, Richard (Dotty) of Medicine Hat, AB, Sonya (Girard) of Richland, WA, and Lee (Charlene) of Forty Mile/New Zealand. She was a proud grandmother to Joey, Richard, Ashley, Alexander, Jacob, Nicholas, Justin, Katelyn, Doug, and Kris, and a great-grandmother to Jackson, Willow, Evie Marie, Braxton, Hudsyn, Joshua, Paris, August, Romi, Ashton, Ryland, and little Evie. Jean's family was her heart, and her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured and inspired

Jean was a trailblazer. She broke new ground as part of the first class of women to graduate from the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Instrumentation Technician, serving her country with distinction before retiring in 1956. She later worked as a warehouse manager with Canadian Tire, where her reliability and dedication earned the respect of many.

Her commitment to her community was unwavering. Jean volunteered countless hours as a judge, treasurer, and costume designer with the Greenwood Figure Skating Club, and went on to serve as a judge and President for Nova Scotia Figure Skating. She also dedicated herself to the Kingston and Area Food Bank as President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and was a proud member of the Catholic Women's League since 1958, achieving Life Membership in recognition of her devotion.

Beyond her service, Jean found joy in creativity and craft. She was gifted in paper tole, quilling, knitting, and crochet, and she loved the quiet challenge of a good jigsaw puzzle.

Jean will be remembered for her strength, her sharp wit, and the no-nonsense way she approached life. She had a knack for speaking her mind—sometimes with humour, sometimes with spice—but always with honesty. Beneath it all was a steady love for her family and community, shown more in action than in words. Her story is one of determination, service, and a spirit that was as strong as it was unforgettable.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
