Obituary

STANFORD, Jean Louise – 97 of Middleton passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton surrounded by her family. She was born in Maitland, Hants County on June 13, 1918 to the late Wilder and Ellen (Cook) Putnam. Jean spent her younger years in Maitland, Hants County, later moving to Waterville, Maine with her family. On returning to Maitland a few years later, she married Guy W. Stanford. Jean lived in Halifax, NS, Victoria, B.C., Dartmouth, NS, Liverpool, NS and finally in later years, settling in Middleton, NS. Jean was always ready to give a helping hand. She was a member of the St John's United Church UCW, Soldiers' Memorial Health Auxiliary Society and other volunteer organizations. Jean was a charter member of the African Violet Society and she took great pride showing her plants at shows in Middleton and Dartmouth. Some of her other hobbies included photography, bird watching, rug hooking and gardening. Jean is survived by her children Mary Ellen McWhirter, Dartmouth, Peter (Janet) Stanford, North Sydney and Robert Stanford, Burns Lake, BC; grandchildren Bryan (Sarah) McWhirter, Sheila McWhirter and Jason Stanford; seven great grandchildren and a great great grandchild; special nieces Ann (Mac) Noble and Carol (Harold) Hawkins. She was predeceased by her husband Guy; sisters Norah Lewis, Erica Crane; brother Duncan Putnam. Jean's family would like to thank special friends Cathy and Bill Rodda, Maureen Ross, Debra Adams and Alice Morrison for all their acts of kindness. Also her family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Transitional Care Unit, Soldiers' Memorial Hospital who took such good care of Jean as well as the Emergency Room staff and EHS. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 25, 2016 in the Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, where the funeral service will be held with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. By request, family flowers only.
