MWO (Ret'r) Johannes D.R. den Hartog (Hans) CD2 passed away peacefully at home May 11, 2022. Born 29 September, 1936 in Utrecht, Netherlands, he was the son of Nikolaas and Hillegonda (née Blok). He studied music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and played piano, violin and French horn. He joined the Canadian forces when they were recruiting musicians for military bands and was one of the fourteen original members of the Black Watch (RHR) of Canada Military Band and later served with the Royal Canadian Artillery band. A lifelong scrap booker he became the band's unofficial historian keeping records of their concerts and tours, a collection donated to the Black Watch Archives.

He travelled widely during his military career – from St John's to Vancouver Island, throughout Western Europe as far east as Cyprus - and was present at some historic moments:  He was present for the 20 ^th anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1964, the raising of the Maple Leaf for the first time over Vimy Ridge in 1965, the Canadian Centennial military tattoo in 1967 and recording national anthems for all countries participating in the Montreal Olympics of 1976.

Retiring to the Annapolis Valley in 1987, he took up yard work and joined the Bridgetown fiddlers. He loved his family and classical music, enjoyed a tasty meal, a good story and a great laugh. He was thankful for a life well lived, much loved and will be greatly missed.

Hans is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years Kay (née Barteaux), daughter Cheryl (Bob Duff), son Vincent (Maggie Sniezyk), grandchildren Nick (Jenn O'Neill) and Anya. Other surviving family include his sister Cornelia (Kwame Pianim), niece Nana and nephews Nick (Erica) and Elkin.

Donations in memory of Hans can be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Annapolis Valley Branch.  Their care in these last months has been compassionate and hugely appreciated. Thank you to Dr. K. Rent and Dr. M. Saxon.  Cremation has taken place. By request there will be no visitation or service.
