Obituary

AKER, John Austin ~ Age 89, of Coldbrook, formerly of Somerset, Kings Co. It is with great sadness that his family announces his passing away after a courageous 25 year battle with cancer on Monday, July 26, 2021, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on September 13, 1931, in Burlington, Kings Co., he was a son of the late Lloyd R. and Lois M. (Best) Aker. John had worked in Toronto, Ontario, for a few years before returning home to Nova Scotia. He was employed at various jobs before going to M.W. Graves Ltd., Berwick, where he retired as a supervisor after 38 years of service. In the retirement years John and Freda also enjoyed camping with their Fox Mountain family. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Freda E. Yorke; daughters, Shelley (Stephen) Owen, Coldbrook; Kimberley (Garth) Vidito, Melvern Square; grandchildren, Abigail, Madeline, Hannah (Andrew), Austin (Ruth), MacKenzie, Zachary, Seth, Ashlie and Logan; sister-in-law, Katherine "Kitty" Coleman-Aker, Cambridge; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Ramona (Joe) Mapplebeck; brother, Leslie (Carol) Aker. Due to public gathering restrictions a private memorial service by invitation only took place at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 1, in Berwick Baptist Church, with Pastor Andrew Conrad officiating. A video of the service is now available on the funeral home website below the text of his obituary. Interment will take place at a later date in Burlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Burlington Cemetery Society, Berwick Baptist Church or to your favourite charity. The family would like to say a special thank you to the home support staff, Victorian Order of Nurses as well as the doctors and nurses at Valley Regional Hospital for the care and compassion shown to John.
