It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Graves announces his passing on November 12, 2024. John was born in 1932 and spent most of his growing up years helping his dad on the family farm. In 1956 John married his wife, Olive (Marshall) in Port Lorne. After his retirement in 1994, he and Olive spent a number of years travelling to and spending a number of months in Florida, enjoying the warmer climate and many activities that they participated in.
John spent most of his life operating heavy equipment and driving trucks. He owned and operated Johns Backhoe and Trucking for many years. During that time, he was instrumental in the building of the Port Lorne Fire Department (of which he was a long-standing member) donating many hours of his time and equipment to this endeavor.
For several years, he owned a boat and fished out of the Bay of Fundy. He also loved restoring antique cars and participating in car shows with his 1946 Packard. He also loved music and played with the Bridgetown Fiddlers for a number of years. When he wasn't joining David at jam sessions and benefit shows, he could be found in his veggie patch and puttering around on his old tractors.
John was a gentle man who loved people, and all were welcome to sit around and "chew the fat" with him in his shop on the mountain.
His grandchildren have many fond memories of their Grampie and he was always happy to see them and the great grandchildren as they came along.
John was predeceased by his parents Joe and Hattie (Allen) Graves, and brothers, Walter and Allen, and their wives, Barb and Sheron.
He is survived by his wife Olive; his son, David (Connie); grandchildren, Robert (Heather), James, Tina (James); great grandchildren, Breanna, Mya, Hayden, Gabriella; step great grandchildren, Weston and Parker; nieces, Julie and Marie; nephews, Stewart and Jonathan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Lea Lodge for the care and compassion that they showed John while he was there, and for the kindness that they have shown our family at this difficult time. We won't soon forget it.
