Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of John Hughes, 85, of Middleton. He was born to the late Jack and Edith (Thomas) Hughes on April 23, 1929, in Byker, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England. He arrived at Pier 21 on Labour Day weekend, 1940, as an evacuee as part of the Children's Overseas Reception Board to live with Mabel and Charlie Dodge on their farm north of Middleton. John had a keen interest in science and graduated from the Maritime College of Pharmacy in Halifax in 1953 and received his B.Sc. the following year from Dalhousie University. He was in the C.O.T.C. at the time. He worked in retail Pharmacy for 26 years; the first 11 years with Balcom and Chittick in Halifax. John moved back to Middleton with his family in 1966 to work in Mumford's Drug Store, which he owned and operated before joining the Valley Drug Mart. He was Director of Pharmacy at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital when he retired in 1993. John was an active member of the community: town councilor for 12 years, fund-raising chairman of the Annapolis East unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, participant and canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Big Bike Ride, Member of the Masonic Lodge (Ionic Lodge #73), past president of the Western Valley Shrine Club, past president of the Valley Scottish Rite Club, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a warm and generous man with a unique sense of humour who loved sports, travelling, and spending time with his family. John, Daddy, and Grampy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Adele (Conrad); his siblings in the U.K., Frank, Doreen (John) Burdon, and Marion (Jimmy) Nichols; children Steven (Maureen), David (Janey), Karen (Max) Corkum, Sherry (Laird) Niven, Beth (Frank) Dame; and his grandchildren John Niven, Dylan Dame, Stacey and Lisa Hughes, and Adele Corkum. By request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 on Tuesday, July 29th, from 7-9 p.m. A Masonic funeral service, open to the public, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30th, at the Middleton Funeral Home. The interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Macdonald Museum, Rosa M.
